For months, the signs were there. President Joe Biden, a man who built a career on grit, empathy, and foreign policy expertise, was slipping behind closed doors. And while much of the country was focused on rising threats from Donald Trump’s authoritarian movement, insiders were quietly reckoning with something else: the president they knew was fading—and no one wanted to say it out loud.
Now, a series of new books reveal what Democratic aides and campaign staff were unwilling to admit publicly during the 2024 election: the signs of Biden’s mental and physical fatigue were unmistakable, and efforts to manage or ignore them may have sealed the fate of the Democratic Party.
One of the most startling details comes from Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes’ new book Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, which describes how Biden, attending a high-dollar fundraiser at New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s home, needed fluorescent tape on the floor to navigate the room. “This wasn’t just stage marks for the camera,” a former aide told the authors. “It was like a trail of breadcrumbs — not for show, but because he truly needed help knowing where to walk.”
The June 27 debate in Atlanta was supposed to be a turning point. It was. But not the way Democrats had hoped.
In Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds, journalist Chris Whipple reveals the surreal atmosphere inside Camp David as Biden’s top aides prepped him for the debate. Ron Klain, Biden’s longtime confidant and former chief of staff, described the president as “exhausted and unfocused.” “He was out of it,” Klain admitted. “We were feeding him answers from note cards. He was obsessed with NATO and couldn’t stay focused on domestic issues.” At one point, Klain said, Biden seemed to forget which office he held. “It felt like he thought he was President of NATO,” he added. “That’s how detached he had become.”
In a scene described as both heartbreaking and alarming, Whipple details a mock debate session that ended after just 25 minutes. “I’m just too tired to continue… I need sleep,” Biden reportedly said before walking off to bed. Staffers, many of whom had known him for decades, were stunned.
Perhaps the most damning assessment comes not from Republican critics, but from Biden’s own allies. One longtime friend of both Biden and Obama called the president’s decision to run again the “original sin” of the 2024 election. “He should never have run,” the person told Allen and Parnes. “His family and his closest staff failed him — and failed the country — by not telling him no.”
Even Whipple admits that the problem wasn’t a cover-up so much as a collective delusion. “Biden’s inner circle believed what they wanted to believe,” he told Politico. “It wasn’t malice. It was denial. And it was dangerous.”
One moment particularly captured Biden’s mindset during this time: after one prep session, he reportedly brushed off domestic criticism by saying, “These guys [foreign leaders] say I’m doing a great job. So I must be a great president.” It was a window into a leader increasingly fixated on foreign policy—and increasingly detached from the urgency of the domestic moment.
The debate performance stunned the nation. Biden appeared disoriented, paused for long stretches, and often struggled to complete thoughts. While the White House blamed a cold and fatigue from international travel, the damage was done.
Democratic lawmakers began to panic. Former President Barack Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly worked behind the scenes to ease Biden toward a graceful exit from the race. That exit came on July 21.
Vice President Kamala Harris stepped up as the Democratic nominee. But by then, the damage was irreversible. She lost to Donald Trump in November, marking a sobering end to what could have been a powerful handoff.
Even Klain, who had sounded the alarm early, told Whipple he disagreed with Biden’s decision to step down. “I thought it was a mistake. This was an avoidable tragedy,” he said.
But history may see it differently. The “tragedy” wasn’t Biden’s decision to leave. It was the delay in doing so — and the silence of those closest to him who chose loyalty over honesty.
The revelations paint a complicated portrait of a president beloved for his decency but undone by time—and of a party paralyzed by the fear of what happens when truth becomes politically inconvenient.
Now, Democrats face a difficult question: How do you rebuild trust when the public suspects you knew more than you let on?
As the nation watches Trump return to power, the consequences of that silence echo loudly.
One thing is clear: In 2024, Democrats weren’t just fighting Trump. They were fighting themselves. And they lost.

Well, we know who picked Biden as VP and he did it to ruin American Politics. He is a liar and a criminal from Africa who hates America and should be investigated and prosecuted for the many crimes he did.
Now that Trump is in power…this matter should be addressed. He has done many bad things that American is now suffering from…including gender identity confusion. How about President Trump sick your investigators on this liar and criminal from Africa where his grandmother said on TV that Obama was born in Africa and she saw it happen.
Sheriff Joe from Phoenix as right and proved his birth certificate was FRAUD. Trumpp should have Obama arrested and prosecuted and convicted SOON.
