Virginia Democrat to Exit Congress After Cancer Returns: “The Sun Is Setting”

Longtime Virginia Democrat Rep. Gerry Connolly announced Monday that he will not seek re-election, revealing his battle with cancer has taken a grim turn.

Connolly, 75, who represents Virginia’s 11th Congressional District just outside Washington, D.C., said he is stepping down from his leadership position as ranking member of the powerful House Oversight Committee and will retire after this term.

“My cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned,” Connolly told constituents in a statement. “The sun is setting on my time in public service.”

The congressman, a fixture in the Democratic establishment for decades, initially announced his esophageal cancer diagnosis last year. After months of aggressive treatment, Connolly said doctors believed the cancer was under control. Now, just six months later, the disease has returned.

“With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter, proud of what we’ve accomplished together over 30 years,” Connolly said.

A Career Built in the Swamp

Connolly’s district covers Fairfax County, home to some of the wealthiest suburbs in America and a hotbed for federal workers. He spent much of his career championing bigger government, defending Washington bureaucrats, and pushing Democratic oversight efforts that Republicans often criticized as partisan witch hunts.

First elected to local office in 1995, Connolly made a name for himself as a reliable liberal voice before winning a seat in Congress in 2008. His political career reflected Northern Virginia’s sharp shift leftward over the past 20 years.

In 2022, he easily defeated Republican challenger Mike Van Meter, a Navy veteran and former FBI agent who warned voters Connolly was “out of touch” with ordinary Americans.

Democrats Rush to Praise

Predictably, the Democratic establishment quickly rallied to Connolly’s side after the announcement.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., praised Connolly as “fiercely intelligent” and “relentlessly committed to the people of Northern Virginia” — even as critics pointed out his long record of supporting tax hikes, heavy-handed COVID mandates, and bloated federal spending.

“Gerry is one of the toughest fighters I know,” Warner said in a statement.

Oversight Role Ending

Connolly’s decision to step down as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee comes as Republicans are preparing to expand investigations into the Biden administration. His departure removes a staunch Democratic defender who often clashed with Republicans over issues ranging from Hunter Biden’s foreign dealings to the botched Afghanistan withdrawal.

“Connolly was a loyal soldier for the Biden agenda,” a senior GOP aide told [Your Outlet]. “His absence will make it harder for Democrats to stonewall investigations moving forward.”

Looking Ahead

With Connolly out, Northern Virginia Democrats will scramble to hold the seat. The district leans blue, but an open seat during an unpredictable election cycle could offer Republicans a long-shot pickup opportunity.

Connolly, meanwhile, says he plans to focus on his health and spend more time with his family.

“I’ll continue doing everything I can to represent you during my remaining time in Congress,” he said. “Thank you for your grace.”

  1. His constitutional score is a paltry 13%, hardly worthy of American citizenship. It\’s perjury– and some might suggest it\’s anarchy.
