A quiet fall night at Oklahoma State University turned into chaos early Sunday morning when gunfire erupted inside a Stillwater residence hall, leaving multiple students injured and an entire campus shaken.
According to Oklahoma State University Police, officers rushed to Carreker East Residence Hall at around 3:40 a.m. after frantic 911 calls reported shots fired. “Our officers were on scene within minutes,” OSU Police Chief Michael Beckner said during an early briefing. “Several victims were located, including at least one confirmed student.”
Authorities confirmed that all known victims were transported to hospitals in Oklahoma City and Tulsa for treatment. Though police have not disclosed the number of people shot, local outlet KOCO-TV reported that three individuals were hospitalized. Their conditions remain unknown as of Sunday morning.
Stillwater Police and OSU Police set up a large perimeter around the dorm, asking students to avoid the area while detectives scoured the scene for shell casings and interviewed witnesses. “This is every parent’s nightmare,” one freshman student told The Oklahoman. “We just heard sirens and texts started flying around—nobody knew what was happening.”
Chief Beckner reassured students that “there is no ongoing threat to campus.” The university also confirmed that classes and campus operations would proceed as scheduled, though counseling services have been made available for students affected by the violence.
Investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from a large off-campus party earlier in the night. “It appears several individuals attended a private gathering before returning to the residence hall,” Beckner said. “An altercation may have broken out once they got back.”
Several students reported hearing shouting in the hallway moments before the shots rang out. “We were all hanging out when suddenly there were these pops—three or four loud bangs,” said sophomore engineering student Tyler Mendez, who lives in the building next door. “We hit the floor and waited for police to show up.”
As of Sunday morning, police had not confirmed whether a suspect was in custody or if any of the injured may have been involved in the shooting. “It’s too early to say who was responsible,” Beckner said, urging the public to avoid speculation. “We’re reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses.”
The incident marks one of several college campus shootings in the region this fall, raising renewed concerns about student safety. Just last month, South Carolina State University went into lockdown after a dormitory shooting injured two people.
By sunrise, yellow police tape surrounded the entrance to Carreker East, a freshman residence hall known for its tight-knit community. Students gathered outside, some in tears, others scrolling through their phones for updates. “You don’t expect something like this in Stillwater,” said senior marketing major Rachel Lane. “This is a safe school. Everyone’s just stunned.”
Oklahoma State University officials issued a brief statement Sunday morning: “We are deeply concerned for the students involved and their families. OSU Police are working closely with Stillwater Police and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. There is no ongoing threat to campus.”
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information has been urged to contact OSU Police immediately.
