Man Killed by Deputies After ‘Gator Attack’ in Shocking Confrontation

What started as a bizarre early-morning call about a shirtless man behaving erratically turned into a deadly confrontation with sheriff’s deputies after an apparent alligator attack, a failed Taser takedown, and an attempted armed vehicle hijacking — all in under two hours.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd called it one of the most unhinged incidents his department has seen.

“You can’t make this up. Meth. A gator. Garden shears. Then he tries to grab a deputy’s shotgun? This guy was out of his mind,” Judd told reporters Monday.

FROM LAKE TO PATROL CAR IN A FRENZIED FIGHT

The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Timothy Schulz, had just been released from jail five days earlier on methamphetamine charges. But Monday morning, he was back in the spotlight — and this time, it ended with bullets flying through a patrol car windshield.

The saga began around 6 a.m., when a convenience store clerk in Lakeland called 911 to report a man “shaking, sweating, and rambling about his son.” Deputies responded, but Schulz had vanished.

Less than two hours later, calls came in from residents of a gated community reporting a man swimming in a lake — one known to be infested with alligators. A witness tossed him a life preserver, but Schulz reportedly growled at him.

Sheriff Judd confirmed Schulz was bitten on the arm by an alligator but still managed to crawl out of the water, bleeding and clearly disturbed. That’s when things took an even darker turn.

GARDEN SHEARS AND A BRICK ATTACK

According to Judd, Schulz grabbed a set of garden shears left outside a nearby home, then attempted to smash into a vehicle using a brick. When deputies arrived, they found him in a frenzy.

“They gave clear commands. They tried the Taser. Twice. It didn’t stop him,” Judd said.

Instead, Schulz ran straight at them with the shears. Deputies continued attempting to subdue him without deadly force — until he made a move that forced their hand.

HEADED FOR THE GUNS

In a shocking escalation, Schulz allegedly dove into the deputies’ still-running cruiser, climbed across the front seat, and reached for the secured rifle and shotgun.

“He knew where they were. He was going for one of them,” Judd said. “Our deputies had no choice.”

Multiple rounds were fired through the vehicle’s windshield. The sheriff’s office later released photos showing the bullet-riddled glass and the chaotic aftermath.

“HE COULD’VE KILLED THEM”

The two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Neither was injured, though Judd was quick to point out how narrowly they escaped.

“This man had been bitten by a gator, was high on meth, and still had the strength to fight, charge, and nearly get control of a firearm. He could’ve killed them both,” Judd emphasized.

TROUBLED PAST, TRAGIC END

Records show Schulz had a lengthy rap sheet, mostly drug-related. Monday’s events marked a tragic and violent end to years of spiraling addiction and erratic behavior.

“He needed help. What he got was meth, and it turned him into someone we couldn’t reason with,” Judd said.

An official autopsy and toxicology report are pending. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assisting with the investigation.

A SHOCKING REMINDER

While Florida law enforcement is no stranger to surreal encounters, even seasoned deputies were rattled by Monday’s mayhem.

“This was Florida Man meets worst-case scenario,” one deputy told local media.

The sheriff’s office is urging the public to report any erratic or threatening behavior early — especially when dangerous substances are involved.

“Drugs and violence don’t mix,” Judd said. “And when they do, someone usually dies.”
