At least two people were killed and another was injured after gunfire erupted inside a crowded Michigan shopping mall Friday afternoon, triggering a lockdown and a massive police response.
The shooting unfolded at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn on July 3, prompting police to warn the public about a “significant incident” and urge everyone to stay away from the area.
“We are asking residents and visitors to avoid the area while officers secure the scene and investigators conduct their work,” the Dearborn Police Department said in a statement.
The mall was immediately placed on lockdown as heavily armed officers searched the building for the suspected shooter and worked to secure the scene.
Sources told Fox 2 Detroit that at least two people were killed during the violence and an innocent bystander was also struck by gunfire. One victim reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, while another was shot in the head.
Police later confirmed that two people had died and another mallgoer was injured.
A disturbing image obtained by the local outlet appeared to show a person holding a firearm inside the mall while struggling with at least two other people.
Investigators believe the shooting may have been targeted rather than a random attack, according to sources cited by Fox 2.
Michigan State Police officers were called in to assist Dearborn authorities as investigators combed through the mall, interviewed witnesses and searched for evidence.
Dearborn Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing, with additional details expected to be released as they become available.
This is a developing story.
