11-Year-Old Kentucky Boy Saves Drowning Man (Video)

An 11-year-old Kentucky boy is being celebrated as a hometown hero after he bravely jumped into a swimming pool and pulled an unconscious man from the water while others reportedly stood by.

Avory Woolery sprang into action around 8 p.m. Wednesday after spotting the unidentified man submerged in a pool at an apartment complex in Lexington, according to local outlet WKYT.

The young boy said he immediately realized someone had to take responsibility before it was too late.

“I was like, somebody’s gotta do something. No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater. I grabbed him up,” Avory told the outlet.

Avory said the man appeared to be unconscious beneath the water and was “almost shaking.” Despite his young age, he did not hesitate.

That was when, he said, his “adrenaline kicked in.”

“There was no way that I was going to let another man die today,” Avory said. “He’s a human being. He should be treated as such.”

Another person at the pool then helped Avory pull the man out of the water and onto the pool deck, where bystanders continued trying to save him while emergency crews raced to the scene.

“His friend, I believe, put him on the floor and started doing CPR on him to try and save him the best he could, until somebody called 911,” Avory recalled.

The Lexington Fire Department said the man was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Officials did not release additional information about what caused the emergency or the extent of his injuries.

His condition remained unknown as of Friday, and the fire department did not immediately respond to further questions.

Avory’s fearless response quickly drew widespread praise online, with social media users calling him a true hero.

“What a very brave young man!!” one Facebook commenter wrote.

“This young man is truely [sic] a Hero!” another added.

“Good job Avory!!! You are definitely a Hero!” a third person wrote.

At just 11 years old, Avory showed the kind of courage and compassion many adults can only hope to display in a life-or-death emergency.

The Woolery family could not be reached for comment.
