Just 50 miles off the Florida coast, a once-glamorous hotel tied to James Bond films may now be at the center of a growing Chinese spy scandal—raising alarms inside U.S. national security circles.
The iconic British Colonial Hotel in Nassau, Bahamas, long associated with high society and cinematic history, is now under intense scrutiny for something far more serious: espionage. Owned since 2014 by China State Construction Engineering Corporation—a firm with deep ties to the Chinese Communist Party—investigators and defense experts believe the property could be doubling as a surveillance hub aimed squarely at the United States.
A Communist Beachhead Near U.S. Shores?
Retired Rear Admiral Peter Brown, who served as homeland security adviser under President Donald Trump, didn’t mince words: “This isn’t just beachfront property—it’s a strategic outpost. From the upper floors, you have a clear line of sight to the U.S. embassy, local government facilities, and even Florida’s space coast. If you were designing a spy base, this is where you’d put it.”
The hotel, once glamorized in Bond classics like Thunderball and Never Say Never Again, sits at the heart of Nassau and boasts a bird’s-eye view over much of the island. But it’s not the glitz and glamour that has officials concerned. It’s the electronics—antennas, surveillance tech, and unexplained renovations—raising red flags about who’s watching what.
Communist Cash Flooding the Islands
The Chinese government’s influence in the Bahamas doesn’t stop at the British Colonial. In the past decade, Beijing has pumped billions into the region through state-backed loans and construction deals.
- $2.5 billion went into building the Baha Mar resort and casino.
- $3 billion funded a megaport operated by a Hong Kong firm.
- A $40 million national stadium was a “gift” from China in 2012.
Critics say it’s not generosity—it’s leverage.
“The CCP doesn’t make charitable donations,” said national security analyst Mark Lyons. “They buy influence, real estate, and political silence.”
Submarine Testing, Rocket Launches—and Foreign Eyes Nearby
Perhaps most chilling is the hotel’s proximity to the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC), located in the deep-sea trench known as the Tongue of the Ocean. This is where America quietly tests submarine tech and anti-sub warfare systems.
“They’re looking at our subs. They’re listening to our frequencies. They’re watching our rocket launches from the Cape,” Brown added. “We’re wide open, and they’re right on our doorstep.”
Trump Administration Sounded the Alarm Early
The Trump White House, recognizing the threat, began pushing back against China’s expanding Caribbean foothold years ago. Then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, along with Senator Marco Rubio, met with leaders from seven Caribbean nations urging caution in accepting Chinese cash.
Rubio’s spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, explained the mission: “Secretary Rubio urged our allies to reject opaque contracts and Beijing’s offers that could compromise their sovereignty and our regional security.”
A Soft Invasion, Hidden in Plain Sight
U.S. officials remain deeply concerned. A State Department spokesperson confirmed ongoing intelligence coordination with local partners, warning, “China’s predatory tactics have left countries drowning in debt and stripped of their independence. We will not let our guard down.”
President Trump, who reignited a tough-on-China stance during his second term, has vowed to “stop the slow invasion of our hemisphere.” He’s called for tighter visa restrictions on Chinese nationals, renewed economic sanctions, and stricter limits on Chinese corporate activity near U.S. borders.
The Bottom Line: Eyes Wide Open
What looks like just another beach resort may actually be part of an elaborate foreign operation hiding in plain sight. With Chinese entities owning key infrastructure across the Caribbean, and high-tech surveillance potentially operating just miles from American soil, security experts are issuing a simple message:
Don’t be fooled by palm trees and piña coladas. The spy games are real—and America is the target.
