Montecito, CA — While Meghan Markle’s public image may be tightly managed, neighbors in her ultra-wealthy enclave claim there’s one thing she can’t spin: her cold shoulder.
Multiple longtime Montecito residents are speaking out, painting a very different picture of the Duchess of Sussex than the glossy magazine spreads suggest. According to those who live just beyond the gates of Meghan and Prince Harry’s $14 million estate, she’s not just aloof—she’s nearly nonexistent.
“She’s practically invisible here,” says veteran local reporter Richard Mineards, who’s been covering the ritzy California enclave for decades. “She doesn’t mingle. She doesn’t connect. It’s like she’s here physically, but not socially.”
Mineards claims the Duchess, 43, has made no effort to fit into the community since relocating to California in 2020 with Prince Harry after their dramatic royal exit.
“She cultivates a highly controlled image,” Mineards told The Daily Mail. “Every word, every outfit, every move—nothing is spontaneous. It’s all staged. It’s like living next door to a PR campaign.”
Snubbing the Locals
Mineards recalled a telling encounter involving a respected elderly historian who attempted to gift Meghan a copy of his locally produced documentary. The man was turned away at the gates.
“He never even got past security,” Mineards said. “She doesn’t play the community game.”
While Meghan is accused of shutting herself off, Montecito icon Oprah Winfrey, who lives just minutes away, is known for attending local charity events and maintaining a down-to-earth presence. The contrast hasn’t gone unnoticed.
“Oprah shows up. Meghan vanishes,” one resident said bluntly.
Harry, On the Other Hand…
Prince Harry, by comparison, is getting a warmer reception. Locals describe the Duke of Sussex as approachable and good-natured.
“Harry is charming, always quick with a smile,” Mineards said. “He walks the beach, shops local, bikes in the hills. People actually see him.”
A neighbor backed up that sentiment, saying Harry can sometimes be spotted walking his Labrador along the beach, trailed—of course—by a black Range Rover and a security detail.
“He seems more at ease here,” Mineards added. “Even with his personal demons, he’s kept his humor.”
Locals Divided on Meghan
Another Montecito resident agreed with Mineards, claiming, “Meghan is more distant. Harry’s the jolly one.”
But not everyone is buying the frosty narrative. Actress Sharon Stone once praised the Sussexes’ move to town, telling Access Hollywood in 2020: “They didn’t come here to live off of our community, they came here to be a part of it.”
One friend of Stone’s even claimed the couple waved at her while biking through town.
Still, for those who’ve tried—and failed—to engage the Duchess in community life, the gestures are few and far between.
“Waving while biking past a red light isn’t the same as showing up to a local fundraiser,” one neighbor remarked. “She lives here. But she’s not with us.”
The Bottom Line
Since buying their palatial estate in 2020, reportedly now worth more than $30 million, Harry and Meghan have chosen privacy over participation. While some might defend their desire to stay out of the spotlight, others say it reeks of elitism and manufactured image control.
“She’s not rude,” said one local. “She’s just… distant. And perfectly polished. Too polished.”
If Meghan’s trying to craft a global persona of warmth and compassion, she may want to start closer to home.
Because in Montecito, neighbors are noticing—what isn’t there.
