Top Biden aides face questioning as Republicans dig into potential abuse of power inside former White House
President Donald Trump has officially ordered the Department of Justice to launch a full-scale investigation into what many Republicans are calling a “coordinated and dangerous cover-up” of Joe Biden’s cognitive decline during his time in office.
The move comes as the House Oversight Committee intensifies its own probe, with a string of private interviews scheduled this week featuring top-level former Biden staffers. Among them: Neera Tanden, Biden’s former Domestic Policy Director, and Anthony Bernthal, a senior advisor to First Lady Jill Biden. Both are expected to testify behind closed doors about whether key officials misled the American public and bypassed presidential authority during Biden’s final year in power.
Comer Leads the Charge: “We Were Lied To”
House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., is leading the charge.
“We have serious concerns that Biden’s top staffers were making critical decisions in his name while he was no longer mentally capable of leading,” Comer told reporters Monday. “This wasn’t just poor judgment. This could be a coordinated fraud against the American people.”
According to committee sources, former Biden staffers Annie Tomasini and Ashley Williams are also on the list for questioning. Investigators are still seeking interviews with Biden’s former Chief of Staff Ron Klain and senior communications advisor Anita Dunn.
Even Biden’s former physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, is slated to testify in July—raising questions about whether medical professionals were pressured to withhold or downplay signs of decline.
Did Biden’s Team Use the Autopen to Sideline Him?
One of the most shocking allegations under scrutiny: that staff used the autopen—a mechanical signature device—to authorize executive actions without Biden’s knowledge or consent.
“If this is true, it means unelected staff were running the country,” said Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla. “That’s a constitutional crisis.”
Trump: “The American People Deserve the Truth”
President Trump, who returned to the White House after a historic re-election, isn’t sitting on the sidelines. In a directive to Attorney General Pam Bondi and White House Counsel David Warrington, Trump ordered the DOJ to investigate “possible criminal misconduct in the concealment of the former president’s mental incapacity.”
“The American people deserve the truth about who was really making the decisions under Biden,” Trump said in a statement. “This isn’t politics—it’s about national security.”
Biden Responds: “I Made the Decisions”
In a brief and defiant statement, Biden denied the allegations. “I was the president. I made the decisions,” he told reporters Tuesday morning. “This is all a distraction.”
But Republican lawmakers aren’t buying it. Several are now pushing for subpoenas and possibly public hearings if the private testimony reveals deeper wrongdoing.
Closed-Door Sessions Aim to Extract the Truth
Rather than holding public hearings that can devolve into partisan grandstanding, Comer said the committee is using private interviews to get real answers.
“In a hearing, you’ve got five minutes, cameras, interruptions. You don’t get the truth,” Comer explained. “But in a one-hour interview behind closed doors, we do.”
Each interview will be transcribed and released to the public at a later date.
A Potential Constitutional Crisis?
If even a portion of the allegations are proven true, it could mark one of the most explosive political scandals in modern U.S. history—raising questions not only about Biden’s fitness for office, but whether a circle of unelected aides seized control of the White House without voters’ knowledge.
“We’re talking about a possible shadow presidency,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. “This is bigger than Watergate.”
The White House has declined further comment.
Stay tuned as the investigation unfolds.
