Jill Biden’s “Work Husband” Ducks Subpoena Threat Amid GOP Probe

The man once known as Jill Biden’s right-hand insider is dodging Congress—and the heat is rising fast.

Anthony Bernal, the former top advisor to Jill Biden and longtime Biden family confidant, is now at the center of a brewing political storm. Once called the first lady’s “work husband,” Bernal has refused to testify before the House Oversight Committee about his alleged role in what Republicans are calling a cover-up of President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline during his time in office.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., isn’t letting it slide.

“He’s got no privilege left to hide behind,” Comer said Wednesday. “Anthony Bernal is running scared. If he doesn’t show up voluntarily, he will be subpoenaed. The American people deserve the truth.”

Bernal was scheduled to testify in a closed-door session on June 26, but after the Trump administration waived executive privilege for key Biden staffers, Bernal abruptly canceled. That decision set off alarms among GOP lawmakers who are digging into who really wielded power in the Biden White House—and whether Bernal and others were actively shielding the nation from the president’s deteriorating mental fitness.

According to letters obtained by Fox News Digital, former President Trump officially waived executive privilege protections for several high-ranking Biden officials. That list includes former Chief of Staff Ron Klain, senior advisor Anita Dunn, and counselor Steve Ricchetti, as well as Bernal and others close to the former president and first lady.

“In light of the extraordinary nature of the Oversight Committee’s investigation, President Trump has determined that executive privilege is not in the national interest,” Deputy White House Counsel Gary Lawkowski wrote in the letter.

Translation: no more legal shields. The GOP is coming—and they’re armed with subpoenas.

The investigation is centered on whether Biden’s closest aides were the real decision-makers in his final year—and if the infamous autopen was used to sign executive orders and pardons without Biden’s awareness.

Neera Tanden, former staff secretary, testified Tuesday that she rarely interacted with President Biden directly. Instead, she relied on “inner circle” aides—like Bernal—to greenlight memos and approvals.

That revelation has only intensified suspicions.

“It’s clear the people closest to Joe Biden—his staff, his family, his so-called gatekeepers—were operating a shadow presidency,” Comer said. “If Anthony Bernal was helping to mask the president’s decline, we’re going to get to the bottom of it.”

Bernal’s refusal to testify marks yet another instance of what Comer called “deliberate obstruction” by Biden’s former team. During the previous Congress, Comer subpoenaed Bernal and two other key aides, alleging they coordinated to keep Biden’s decline out of public view and away from staff who might raise concerns.

Now, with executive privilege stripped away and multiple aides agreeing to testify, Bernal stands increasingly alone—and vulnerable.

The Oversight Committee believes Bernal played a central role in shaping the president’s public image while quietly managing behind-the-scenes chaos. As Jill Biden’s closest staffer, he wasn’t just arranging flower displays and speeches. He had access to the president’s schedule, inner circle, and the levers of communication with the public.

Insiders say that relationship may have been instrumental in maintaining the illusion of normalcy as the president allegedly grew more confused and withdrawn.

Comer confirmed more witnesses will appear in the coming weeks. Some of them, he said, are willing to “tell the truth about what was really happening behind closed doors.”

Bernal, however, may soon be dragged before the committee whether he likes it or not.

“You can’t hide forever,” Comer warned. “The era of protecting the Bidens at all costs is over.”
