A Super Bowl halftime performer was arrested this week after disrupting the nationally televised performance with a politically charged protest, waving a flag that read “Sudan and Free Gaza” in front of tens of millions of viewers.
The man, identified as 41-year-old Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu of New Orleans, was taken into custody Thursday by Louisiana State Police after voluntarily turning himself in with an attorney present. Authorities say Nantambu “broke protocol” and stormed the field mid-performance, interrupting the carefully choreographed show to stage what officials called an “unauthorized political demonstration.”
The incident occurred during Super Bowl LIX on February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, where rap artist Kendrick Lamar headlined a high-profile halftime performance with guest appearances by singer SZA, actor Samuel L. Jackson, and tennis icon Serena Williams.
According to police, Nantambu was an approved performer for the halftime show but went rogue. “He deviated from his assigned role, retrieved a Sudanese flag bearing the message ‘Sudan and Free Gaza,’ and ran across the field,” Louisiana State Police said in a statement. “He ignored multiple orders from security and law enforcement to stand down.”
Law enforcement responded swiftly, detaining him without further incident. A warrant was later issued through the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, citing charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace by interrupting a lawful assembly.
The disruption has sparked backlash among many Americans who feel political activism has no place in sporting events — especially one as culturally significant as the Super Bowl.
“He knew what he was doing,” said Marcus Dailey, a retired NOPD officer and current security consultant. “You don’t hijack the nation’s biggest sporting event to push a message like that. This was about attention, not awareness.”
The NFL, which has faced criticism in recent years over politicized messaging during games and performances, has yet to issue an official statement. But sources close to the league say they are reviewing vetting procedures for all future halftime participants.
Nantambu, a local activist and amateur musician, has reportedly been involved in a number of small-scale demonstrations in the New Orleans area. Social media accounts under his name have shared pro-Palestinian content and commentary critical of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and Africa.
A Facebook post made just hours before the Super Bowl read: “Sometimes you have to break the script to make the world see what’s behind the curtain.”
According to law enforcement, Nantambu’s stunt not only breached contract and security measures but may have put others in danger due to the high-intensity logistics involved in staging the halftime show.
Nantambu faces misdemeanor charges, but legal experts say prosecutors may push for stricter penalties, given the scale of the event and the potential for disruption.
“He walked into the most-watched broadcast in America and made himself the headline,” said Jefferson Parish attorney Bill Mattox. “Whether you agree with his message or not, the law is clear: you don’t have the right to hijack a lawful assembly.”
For many viewers, the moment was barely noticed amid the chaos of lights and music. But for officials and organizers, it was a sobering reminder that even the Super Bowl isn’t immune from political theater.
As for Nantambu, he remains free on bond and has yet to comment publicly. But his brief appearance with a controversial flag has sparked a broader debate: is the Super Bowl a platform for protest — or sacred American tradition off-limits to politics?

Just another crackpot trying to grab a few seconds of public attention. He accomplished absolutely nothing other than annoying the viewers. These stooges need to realize that any effect they may have on the Gaza issue is strictly negative. If the clowns they claim to represent would cease attacking Israel, I’m willing to bet that the war, for all practical purposes, would cease to continue.
Very disturbing. Comes here has a good life then cuts the throats of all Americans. Sent from my iPhone
