Dozens of Christians Brutally ‘Butchered’ in Horrific Church Attack

“May the blood of these martyrs become a seed of peace.” – Pope Leo XIV

In a horrifying midnight assault, ISIS-affiliated jihadis stormed a prayer vigil in the Democratic Republic of Congo and butchered 49 Christians with machetes—many while they were on their knees, praying.

The brutal rampage unfolded in the small eastern town of Komanda during the early hours of Sunday, July 27, where worshippers had gathered for an overnight prayer service. The attackers, identified as members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist terror group aligned with the Islamic State, hacked men, women, and even children to death before setting homes ablaze and abducting villagers.

Nine children were confirmed among the dead.

Pope Leo XIV condemned the slaughter from Rome, calling the murdered faithful “martyrs” and urging global unity in defense of religious freedom.

“This unspeakable act of evil must not be ignored. May the blood of these martyrs become a seed of peace, reconciliation, fraternity, and love for the Congolese people,” the pontiff declared in a message delivered by a senior Vatican cardinal.

The U.S. State Department also slammed the massacre. A spokesperson reminded the public that the ADF—also referred to as ISIS-DRC—has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization since 2021.

“We strongly condemn this cowardly act of violence against Christians in their place of worship,” the department stated.

This latest massacre comes amid mounting concern that jihadist violence is spiraling across sub-Saharan Africa, where Islamist groups are increasingly shifting their focus after setbacks in the Middle East.

Experts warn this attack is far from isolated. The ADF has spent years trying to carve out a territory for an Islamic caliphate in eastern Congo—mirroring the Islamic State’s gruesome campaign in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

“This is calculated terrorism,” said Illia Djadi, senior analyst for Open Doors, a global Christian watchdog group. “They want to erase Christianity from this region and replace it with extremist rule. They are targeting churches because they know faith is what holds these communities together.”

Djadi added that the rise of Islamic State-affiliated groups in Africa has made the region the “new epicenter of global jihadism.”

Christians make up over 80% of the population in the DRC, while Muslims remain a small minority. Yet militants have unleashed a wave of religious violence with growing impunity.

The Komanda slaughter is just one of several devastating attacks on Christians this year alone.

In February, 70 Christians were reportedly beheaded inside a church in eastern Congo. And on June 13, Pope Leo revealed that “some 200 people were murdered, with extraordinary cruelty,” in Yelewata, Nigeria.

According to Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List, 3,100 of the 4,476 Christians killed for their faith this year died in Nigeria—a staggering 69% of all global Christian martyrdoms.

Despite President Trump’s 2024 peace initiative in the region—hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough between Congo and Rwanda—experts say the situation on the ground remains dire.

“While the M23 rebel group is being pushed back in urban zones, rural areas have been completely abandoned,” Djadi explained. “This has created a deadly vacuum. ADF fighters are walking through villages like executioners, murdering innocent Christians with machetes while the world looks away.”

The U.N.’s peacekeeping mission in Congo, MONUSCO, said the attack “constitutes a grave breach of international humanitarian law.” But on the ground, words offer little comfort to survivors digging graves for children.

“If the Congolese government continues to leave rural regions undefended, these massacres will only increase,” Djadi warned. “We are watching a genocide unfold in real time.”

The international community has been urged to act—not just with words, but with support, pressure, and protection for vulnerable communities.

For now, the churches of eastern Congo remain soaked in blood, their prayers interrupted by the sounds of terror—and a desperate plea for the world to finally listen.
