In a horror scene that could rival the darkest chapters of modern history, Islamic terrorists stormed a Catholic-run hospital in the heart of Africa on Friday night, slaughtering mothers in their beds and kidnapping newborns.
The massacre — which left at least 17 dead, including 11 women — has sparked global condemnation, with Pope Leo XIV warning the world that Christian persecution is no longer a regional issue, but a worldwide plague.
“They slit the throats of breastfeeding mothers,” said Col. Alain Kiwewa, the local administrator. “Some babies were taken. We don’t know where.”
Speaking from the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV took a rare and pointed stance in a public message posted to his official X account.
“In various parts of the world, Christians suffer discrimination and persecution,” the pope declared. “I accompany in prayer the families of Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where in recent days there has been a massacre of civilians. Let us pray that all violence may cease…”
But behind the solemn words is a deeper cry — for the West to stop turning a blind eye.
Rev. Giovanni Piumatti, a missionary priest with over 50 years of service in the region, didn’t mince words.
“This is a typical ADF attack,” Piumatti told Vatican News. “They kill mothers as they breastfeed. They burn our hospitals. They destroy villages. And the world says nothing.”
The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) — an Islamic terror group aligned with ISIS since 2019 — stormed the diocesan health center in Byambwe, North Kivu. The attackers torched the facility, looted medicine, and wiped out 27 homes nearby.
The hospital was operated by the Little Sisters of the Presentation, a Catholic order that provides basic surgical and maternity care in a region otherwise abandoned by the state.
“They butchered the patients. These weren’t soldiers. These were civilians. Women. The elderly. Children,” said one survivor, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal.
President Donald J. Trump, in office during this ongoing crisis, has already designated Nigeria and surrounding regions as ‘Countries of Particular Concern’ for their failure to protect Christians.
Rep. Riley Moore (R-WV), appearing Sunday on Fox News, said the administration is pushing for visa sanctions, funding freezes, and United Nations action.
“The world ignored Rwanda. It ignored Syria. We will not ignore Congo. Not on President Trump’s watch,” Moore told viewers. “If your government can’t stop the slaughter of Christians, then it doesn’t deserve American money.”
According to Human Rights Watch, the ADF has been behind hundreds of killings across Congo. In August 2025, the group attacked a church in Ituri Province during a prayer service, leaving 40 dead, including children hacked to death with machetes.
Meanwhile, African leaders, including members of the African Union, have downplayed claims of genocide, leading to fierce blowback from lawmakers like Sen. Ted Cruz, who has warned African officials that U.S. patience has worn thin.
“It’s genocide. Full stop,” Cruz said last month. “And if the AU won’t say it, the United States must.”
The attacks come amid a resource war in mineral-rich North Kivu, where multinational corporations and local militias are battling for control over coltan, gold, and lithium — key materials used in smartphones and electric vehicles.
“Western silence is bought with mineral wealth,” Rev. Piumatti charged. “That’s the price of Congolese blood — an iPhone.”
As President Trump moves to crack down on Christian persecution abroad, and Pope Leo XIV demands international outrage, the massacre in Byambwe stands as yet another grim reminder:
In 2025, Christians remain the world’s most targeted faith group — and too many in power still refuse to admit it.
