A wealthy Connecticut community is reeling after an elderly philanthropist was brutally killed—allegedly by her own son—inside her $2.7 million Greenwich mansion.
Police say 83-year-old Suzanne Adams, a beloved figure in the neighborhood, was found dead alongside her 56-year-old son, Stein-Erik Soelberg, during a welfare check Tuesday afternoon.
According to the state medical examiner, Adams died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck compression—signs of a violent struggle. Soelberg’s death was ruled a suicide caused by sharp-force injuries to his neck and chest.
Neighbors describe Adams as active and vibrant. “She was always on her bike, always smiling,” said longtime resident Carol Benson. “You’d never think something like this could happen here.”
But her son, locals say, was another story. “He was… different,” one neighbor told the Greenwich Time. “He’d walk by muttering to himself, staring at the ground.”
Soelberg reportedly moved back into his mother’s home five years ago after a divorce. In that time, he racked up multiple encounters with police. In 2019, he vanished for several days before being found “in good health.” Later that year, he was arrested for ramming parked cars and urinating in a woman’s duffel bag. As recently as February, police arrested him after he failed a sobriety test during a traffic stop.
Despite a troubled history, Soelberg publicly shared his health struggles in 2023. A GoFundMe page claimed he was battling jaw cancer, raising $6,500 of a $25,000 goal for surgery. Weeks later, he posted that doctors had “ruled out cancer with high probability” but still couldn’t explain the growth of bone tumors in his jaw. “They removed a half a golf ball yesterday,” he wrote in one disturbing update.
In the days before the tragedy, Soelberg posted bizarre messages online, accusing unknown parties of tampering with his phone. “The camera was turning on by itself,” he wrote. “Even with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular off, I was still getting a signal. And now the phone has mysteriously gone missing while I was in a restaurant.”
Police have not disclosed a motive for the killing. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, but neighbors remain shaken. “We all knew something wasn’t right with him,” one resident admitted. “But no one expected this.”
