Passengers on a British Airways flight from London to San Diego endured a nightmare midair meltdown when a woman allegedly vomited on a family, spat wine in their faces, and caused chaos in the cabin before passing out.
Flight BA273 left Heathrow on August 12 and was expected to be a routine 11-hour journey carrying 214 passengers. Instead, it became a scene one traveler described as “absolute bedlam.”
According to witnesses, the unidentified woman smuggled a full bottle of wine aboard in her carry-on. “She was slugging it back like there was no tomorrow,” said one passenger seated nearby. “She kept saying it was her birthday, but by the time we hit 30,000 feet, she was off her face.”
The situation escalated quickly. The woman began hurling insults at a couple and their young daughter seated behind her, then staggered down the aisle, muttering incoherently.
Moments later, she allegedly turned around and spat wine directly into the family’s faces. “It was rancid,” another passenger recalled. “She swished the wine in her mouth and spat it right at them on purpose. People were screaming. It was disgusting.”
Witnesses say she then threw water on the family, yanked the mother’s hair, and even started snapping photos of the shocked trio.
Things hit a breaking point when the woman reportedly vomited all over the family. Nearby passengers began shouting at her while crew members rushed in to contain the situation.
“The cabin smelled awful,” said a source close to the investigation. “You could see people covering their faces. The poor family was devastated.”
Flight attendants moved the victims from economy to the front of the plane and issued the unruly traveler a “final warning.”
The captain contacted authorities mid-flight, alerting them to the disruptive passenger. When the plane landed in San Diego, FBI agents boarded immediately and arrested the woman, who had passed out for the remainder of the journey.
British Airways confirmed that multiple passengers and crew members provided statements to federal investigators. The affected family is cooperating fully.
Airlines reserve the right to refuse boarding to anyone who appears intoxicated, but midair meltdowns like this one have been on the rise. The FAA has reported a significant increase in disruptive passenger cases since 2020, many linked to alcohol abuse during flights.
“People think they can drink as much as they want at 30,000 feet,” said former airline safety consultant Jack Williams. “But once you’re sealed in a metal tube, there’s nowhere for anyone to escape when things get out of control.”
The FBI has not yet released charges against the woman, but sources say she could face hefty fines, a federal ban from British Airways, and possible jail time.
