Christian Icon and Advisor to Five U.S. Presidents Dies at 89

America has lost one of its most powerful voices for faith and family. Dr. James C. Dobson, founder of the groundbreaking Christian ministry Focus on the Family and advisor to five U.S. presidents, passed away peacefully Thursday morning at the age of 89, according to the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI).

For decades, Dobson stood at the center of the nation’s cultural battles, helping shape policy and defend traditional American values at a time when faith, family, and freedom were under attack.

A Champion for Faith and Family

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1936, Dobson began his career as a psychologist but became a household name by the late 1970s when he founded Focus on the Family in Arcadia, California. By 1991, the ministry had moved its headquarters to Colorado Springs, where it became one of the largest evangelical organizations in the world.

Under Dobson’s leadership, the Focus on the Family daily radio program exploded in reach — airing on more than 4,000 stations across North America, translated into 27 languages, and broadcast to over 160 countries.

“Dr. Dobson was a pioneer whose voice shaped the way generations understood faith, family, and culture,” said Gary Bauer, senior vice president of public policy at JDFI. “His bold leadership and deep convictions helped millions of Americans navigate a rapidly changing world.”

An Influential Presidential Advisor

Dobson’s reach went far beyond the pulpit. Over the course of his life, he advised five U.S. presidents: Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald J. Trump.

He served on President Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board during the 2016 campaign and played a pivotal role in uniting evangelicals behind Trump’s America First agenda.

“James Dobson was a warrior for God and country,” President Trump said in a statement from the White House today. “He believed in the sanctity of life, the strength of the American family, and the greatness of our nation under God. His wisdom and friendship will be deeply missed.”

Defending Life, Marriage, and Morality

Throughout his career, Dobson was at the forefront of the conservative movement’s most significant cultural battles. He campaigned against abortion, opposed the expansion of pornography, and warned that efforts to redefine marriage would undermine the foundation of American society.

“He had the courage to speak truth when others stayed silent,” said Rev. Franklin Graham, longtime ally and president of Samaritan’s Purse. “James didn’t just defend family values — he mobilized people of faith to take action.”

Dobson’s bestselling books, including The New Dare to Discipline and When God Doesn’t Make Sense, sold millions of copies and became staples in Christian homes across America.

A Lasting Legacy

After stepping down from Focus on the Family in 2010, Dobson launched the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute to continue his mission on a more personal level.

Even into his late 80s, Dobson remained a commanding voice in debates over religious freedom, education, and parental rights.

“He equipped countless families to stand strong in a culture that often sought to tear them apart,” Bauer said. “He was more than a leader — he was a mentor and a friend.”

Dobson is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; their children, Danae and Ryan; daughter-in-law Laura; and two grandchildren.
