Cracker Barrel is hitting the brakes on its controversial $700 million “modern redesign” after a massive nationwide backlash from loyal customers — and a sharp rebuke from President Trump himself.
The Southern staple announced Tuesday that it’s suspending all restaurant remodels and restoring its classic “old country store” look after furious diners accused the company of “going woke” by scrapping its beloved Uncle Herschel logo and ditching its signature country charm.
President Trump blasted the company’s redesign during a Monday rally in Nashville, calling it “another example of corporate America abandoning its roots.”
“Cracker Barrel built its success on family, faith, and tradition,” Trump said to thunderous applause. “Nobody goes there for soy lattes and minimalist furniture. People want rocking chairs, fireplaces, and real American food — not some woke California coffee shop vibe.”
Within 24 hours, Cracker Barrel folded.
In a statement titled “Your Old Country Store Is Here to Stay,” CEO Julie Felss Masino promised loyal customers that the chain had heard them “loud and clear.”
“We tested the modern remodel design in only four locations out of 660, and we won’t continue with it,” the statement read. “Our vintage Americana — the rocking chairs, the fireplaces, the peg games, and Uncle Herschel — will always be here.”
The company added that while it will invest in basic maintenance, the cluttered, cozy, country-store aesthetic is staying.
The drama began when Cracker Barrel quietly launched a plan to strip down its interiors, swap dark wood for white walls, and roll out a new text-only logo that erased Uncle Herschel, the iconic character who’s graced the brand for decades.
Customers revolted almost immediately, flooding social media with calls to boycott.
“It looked like an airport lounge,” one longtime diner fumed on Facebook. “This isn’t the Cracker Barrel my family grew up with.”
Conservative critics accused the company of abandoning traditional American values to appease “woke investors.” The backlash tanked Cracker Barrel’s stock price and forced management to restore the original logo.
Meanwhile, internal tensions at the company have been growing. Workers accused Masino of gutting kitchen jobs, slashing hours to avoid providing health insurance, and replacing scratch-cooked meals with frozen, microwaved substitutes.
“This isn’t homestyle cooking anymore,” one employee told The Post anonymously. “We feel like they’re trying to turn us into Applebee’s.”
Cracker Barrel’s retreat underscores a growing trend: companies that embrace “woke” rebranding are facing a fierce cultural backlash. With President Trump back in the White House, corporate America is under renewed pressure to stay true to its customer base — or risk losing it.
As one X (formerly Twitter) user put it: “We go to Cracker Barrel for America. Keep your sterile, woke redesigns. Bring back Uncle Herschel.”

“Whacker – Barrel” not only has a DEI problem – it has a CEO problem. Both need to be ditched. If they want to experiment on new products, don’t take a proven product and change it – go create a different new one somewhere else.
Back to the CEO – that woman is a whacko and does not belong on anyone’s board. She’d do better staying home and scrubbing her own floors.
