Archaeologists Make ‘Significant’ Discovery Near Jesus Miracle Site

Archaeologists have made a groundbreaking discovery in Jerusalem’s City of David: the remains of a massive ancient dam near the Pool of Siloam, the very spot tied to one of the Bible’s most famous miracles.

The Pool of Siloam, first unearthed in 2004, is where the Gospel of John recounts Jesus healing a blind man who washed his eyes in its waters. Now, just steps away, researchers have uncovered a monumental dam dating back nearly 2,800 years.

According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, the dam was built between 805 and 795 B.C., possibly during the reign of King Joash or King Amaziah. Standing about 39 feet high, 69 feet long, and 26 feet wide, it’s not only the largest dam ever discovered in Israel but also the oldest known in Jerusalem.

The discovery, part of a joint project with the Weizmann Institute of Science, was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers were able to date the structure with remarkable precision thanks to organic material embedded in the mortar.

Experts believe the dam was an ingenious response to a climate crisis in ancient times. It was designed to gather water from the Gihon Spring and divert floodwaters rushing through Jerusalem’s main valley. Archaeologists say this was a direct reaction to long periods of drought broken by sudden, destructive storms.

“This is one of the most impressive and significant First Temple-period remains in Jerusalem,” said IAA Director Eli Escusido. “In recent years, Jerusalem has been revealed more than ever before, with all its periods, layers and cultures – and many surprises still await us.”

The City of David has already revealed countless treasures of biblical history, from rare seals to ancient gardens, and even coins minted just before the destruction of the Second Temple. But this massive dam stands out as a testament to how ancient Jerusalem adapted to survive in harsh and changing conditions — all within walking distance of where scripture says Jesus performed a miracle still told today.
