Conservative commentator Scott Jennings is taking no chances. The longtime CNN analyst has reported former MSNBC firebrand Keith Olbermann to the FBI after receiving an expletive-laced threat on social media that read: “You’re next, motherf***er.”
The explosive message, which Olbermann later deleted, came after Jennings mocked ABC’s handling of Jimmy Kimmel’s controversial late-night suspension. Jennings shared the threatening post publicly and tagged FBI Director Kash Patel, warning that such rhetoric cannot be brushed aside.
“This isn’t just internet banter,” Jennings told colleagues in Washington. “When a public figure says something like this, you report it. Period.”
Olbermann, 66, has long been known for fiery tirades. But his latest outburst shocked even his critics. In addition to the crude threat, Olbermann raged that Jennings’ career was “next” and sneered that he should send tapes to “Real America’s Voice.”
He doubled down in a second post: “We won, you stupid pieces of s***. The last fold to fascism was last week. Now we get the fascists off real TV.”
The venom came after Disney announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return to air just days after the comedian joked about conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Charlie Kirk’s murder earlier this month stunned conservatives across America. But what turned grief into fury were Kimmel’s on-air remarks, where he accused Republicans of “trying to score political points” from the killing.
The backlash was swift. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr slammed Kimmel’s performance as “truly sick” and warned Disney and ABC that federal regulators could take “immediate action” against the network. “There has to be accountability,” Carr declared.
Disney temporarily suspended production, citing “ill-timed” and “insensitive” comments. But just days later, the network announced Kimmel’s return—setting off the latest firestorm.
The incident has erupted under President Donald Trump’s second term, where the White House has positioned itself as a bulwark against what it calls “media disinformation” and “coastal elitism.”
Olbermann’s tirade plays directly into that narrative. “This is the face of the radical left,” one senior Trump aide told reporters. “Threats, rage, and open hatred for conservatives who dare to have a voice.”
Even Jennings’ CNN colleagues, many of them left-leaning, were privately disturbed. “This is not a game,” one producer admitted. “People remember what happened when rhetoric like this went unchecked in 2020.”
Olbermann has been out of mainstream television for years, reduced largely to angry online broadcasts and late-night rants on X. He has previously attacked conservatives with slurs, mocked Trump voters as “morons,” and even called Supreme Court justices “traitors.”
But critics say this time crossed the line. Jennings’ report to the FBI could spark an official investigation. Whether Olbermann faces charges remains to be seen.
Disney insiders say Kimmel plans to address the controversy in his upcoming monologue but will not apologize. That decision could prolong the standoff with both federal regulators and viewers outraged over his remarks about Kirk’s death.
For Jennings, however, the real concern is public safety. “This isn’t just about me,” he said. “It’s about what kind of country we’re living in when threats like this become normalized.”
