Is This the Worst Poll of the Year for Democrats?

Washington’s political class is reeling after fresh polling data revealed what could be the Democrats’ worst showing of the year. Despite President Donald Trump’s personal approval numbers taking a dip, Republicans are crushing Democrats on nearly every major issue that matters to American voters.

A Reuters/Ipsos survey taken September 19–21 shows Republicans holding commanding leads on crime, immigration, corruption, and even gun control—traditional Democrat talking points.

  • On crime, Republicans outpaced Democrats 40% to 20%.
  • On immigration, Republicans held an 18-point lead.
  • On corruption, Republicans are up six points.
  • Even on gun control, Democrats’ supposed stronghold, the GOP is ahead by four points.

The poll also gave Republicans a 12-point edge on foreign policy and a 10-point advantage on the economy—areas where Democrats once felt confident they could compete.

Political analyst John Feehery didn’t mince words: “This is a nightmare scenario for Democrats. If you’re losing the argument on gun control and corruption, it means voters simply don’t trust you anymore.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer went on MSNBC’s Morning Joe this week, brushing off concerns from within his party. “Even though Democrats’ numbers are low, that’s fine because they’re still higher than that of Republicans,” Schumer insisted.

But the numbers tell a different story. As the Morning Joe host shot back: “The polls don’t show that, though.”

The exchange underscored what many inside the Beltway already fear—that Democrats are out of touch and clinging to outdated narratives that no longer resonate with working-class voters.

While President Trump’s overall approval rating dipped to 41% in this poll, the same survey shows Republicans as the trusted party to solve the very problems Americans care about most. On immigration alone, 42% of respondents said Trump is handling the issue well—his highest mark in the poll.

Jason Lange of Reuters explained: “Even though many dislike Trump personally, they believe Republicans are better equipped to handle the country’s toughest problems.”

That paradox has left Democrats struggling to explain how they can defeat a party that voters don’t love, but still trust more than them.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Left. Democrats still hold advantages on women’s rights (+13), the environment (+14), and healthcare (+9). But even those numbers may not be enough to save them in 2026, as voters increasingly rank crime, border security, and inflation as their top concerns.

Professor Alan Abramowitz, an election analyst, told Fox News: “Democrats have lost credibility on the basics—keeping people safe, securing the border, and ensuring the economy works for average Americans. Those are kitchen-table issues. Without them, no amount of talk about climate or gender rights is going to win elections.”

With 54% of Americans saying the economy is on the wrong track and just 28% approving of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, the frustration is real. But here’s the kicker: Republicans still hold the trust advantage to fix it.

That’s a dangerous position for Democrats. As Republican strategist Sarah Isgur put it: “When voters are angry, they don’t always vote for the candidate they like. They vote for the candidate they think can get the job done. Right now, that’s the GOP.”
