A political earthquake just shook the Democratic establishment.
A new Gallup poll has confirmed what millions of Americans already suspected: confidence in Democratic leadership in Congress has crumbled—and not just among Republicans.
According to the nationwide survey, only 25% of Americans now express confidence in congressional Democrats. That’s the lowest rating ever recorded by Gallup for the party, sinking nine points from the previous record low in 2023. Even more alarming for Democrats? The sharpest drop came from within their own base.
Gallup’s breakdown revealed a staggering 41-point plunge in confidence among registered Democrats compared to just one year ago.
“Democratic voters are tired of being ignored,” said political strategist Mark Conrad. “They handed their leaders defeat after defeat and expected a fight. What they got instead was silence, confusion, and a lot of bad strategy.”
Meanwhile, Republican leadership is riding high. Gallup reports a 39% confidence rating for congressional Republicans—far above their own historical lows. It’s a dramatic reversal of fortune heading into a critical election year.
Liberal Meltdown After Trump’s Return
The poll drop follows a bruising few months for the left. Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January, he’s moved quickly to dismantle bloated federal programs, curb the administrative state, and restore border enforcement—popular moves among conservatives that have enraged progressives.
But while the Democratic base is seething, they aren’t channeling their anger at Trump. They’re turning it inward.
“There’s a sense of betrayal,” said journalist and author Katrina Voss. “Progressives expected their leaders to stand firm. Instead, they’ve watched Republicans take the field unchallenged while their own party runs scared.”
Democrats Imploding From the Inside
Tensions have exploded between the Democratic Party’s aging establishment and its restless younger wing. Vice President JD Vance, a rising Republican star, has been drawing huge crowds with fiery populist messaging—and Democrats are struggling to counter it.
Even Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) is sounding the alarm.
“We need to take on JD Vance directly,” Khanna told Fox News Digital. “We need more from our leadership.”
The infighting has become so public that party operatives are reportedly bracing for further splinters ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Adding fuel to the fire, a controversial new move by the Democratic National Committee’s vice chair was leaked to the press this week—an internal policy shift that several lawmakers say was pushed through without consensus, deepening internal divides.
Polls Spell Doom Heading Into 2026
The bad news doesn’t stop with Gallup. Similar polls from Quinnipiac, CNN, and NBC News this spring confirm the same trajectory: Democratic favorability is plummeting—especially among young voters, working-class Americans, and even among minority communities once thought to be a solid base.
That erosion was clear last November, when Democrats were swept in a historic electoral defeat. Republicans reclaimed the White House, secured a Senate majority, and narrowly defended the House—all while making inroads with Black and Hispanic voters.
“This is a realignment in motion,” said pollster Henry Carlisle. “And if Democrats don’t course-correct fast, it could take a decade to recover.”
While President Trump continues reshaping the federal government at breakneck speed, Democratic leaders like Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries are facing growing questions: Who’s really leading the party—and will anyone be left to follow them?
Stay tuned. The meltdown may be just beginning.
