Trump Responds to Deadly Attack on Michigan Church

A quiet Sunday morning erupted into chaos in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, after a gunman rammed his vehicle into a church, opened fire on worshippers, and ignited a blaze that consumed the sanctuary. Authorities confirmed the attacker is dead, but the toll on the faithful community is staggering.

The nightmare began just after 10:30 a.m. when the suspect, a 40-year-old man from nearby Burton, drove straight through the front doors of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“He then exited his vehicle, firing several rounds at individuals within the church,” Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye told reporters. “Ten gunshot victims have been transported to local hospitals at this time, including one who has been deceased.”

Witnesses said worshippers screamed and scrambled for cover as smoke filled the building. One parishioner, who asked not to be named, described the scene as “a war zone.”

“I grabbed my kids and ran,” the father of three said. “We could hear shots ringing out behind us as the fire alarms went off.”

Two officers quickly engaged the gunman, killing him in an exchange of gunfire. He was armed with what appeared to be an assault-style rifle.

“There is no longer a threat to the public,” Renye said. However, he grimly warned that the search of the burned-out church may reveal additional victims. “We do believe that we will find more once we can safely enter the building.”

The FBI and ATF are leading the investigation. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the shooting “heartbreaking and chilling.”

“Such violence at a place of worship is unthinkable,” Bondi said. “Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”

Federal agents have not released a motive, though officials say the incident fits into a disturbing pattern of rising attacks on U.S. churches since 2021.

President Donald Trump posted an urgent message on Truth Social after being briefed.

“This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America,” Trump wrote. “The FBI was immediately on scene, and will be leading the Federal Investigation, and providing full support to State and Local Officials. In the meantime, PRAY for the victims, and their families. THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!”

Vice President JD Vance echoed those words, posting on X: “Just an awful situation in Michigan. Prayers for all involved, and gratitude for the first responders.”

Members of the church said the attack struck during their sacrament service, when the entire congregation was gathered inside the chapel.

In a statement, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called the shooting “a tragic act of violence.”

“Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection,” the statement read. “We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”

Local hospitals, including Henry Ford Health, confirmed they are treating multiple victims, some in critical condition.

Attacks on Christian churches have risen sharply in recent years, a trend that faith leaders say demands urgent action. “This cannot become the new normal,” said Reverend Mark Dobson, a nearby pastor. “Christians should not fear for their lives just to worship God on a Sunday morning.”

As fire crews sift through the rubble and families wait for word on loved ones, the Michigan community faces a long road to recovery.
