Speaker Johnson Gets into Heated Exchange with ABC Anchor (Video)

The first day of a partial government shutdown exploded into a fiery showdown on national television as House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., went head-to-head with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos over Democrats’ push to extend Obamacare subsidies.

The Wednesday morning clash on Good Morning America showcased the deep partisan divide. While Democrats insisted their plan protected American families, Johnson accused them of holding the government hostage to sneak healthcare coverage to illegal immigrants.

“Why are you against protecting millions of Americans from losing Medicaid coverage or paying higher premiums?” Stephanopoulos pressed.

“That’s an absurd statement,” Johnson snapped back. “Forty-four Senate Democrats voted last night to block a clean funding bill to keep this government open. They demanded healthcare for illegal aliens instead of critical services for American citizens. That’s the truth.”

When Stephanopoulos countered that immigrants here illegally are barred from ACA subsidies, Medicaid, and Medicare, Johnson cut in: “That’s not true. What their bill does is unwind the changes Republicans made in the big, beautiful healthcare reform law President Trump signed on July 4. That bill saved Medicaid for the people who deserve it — not for those who broke into our country.”

The shutdown began at midnight after Congress failed to agree on a stopgap funding measure. At the center of the standoff is Democrats’ demand to lock in Obamacare tax credits, which were set to expire at the end of the year.

Republicans, backed by President Trump, rejected the move. They argue it would reverse GOP reforms that cleaned out fraudulent enrollees and barred illegal immigrants from accessing benefits.

Johnson pointed to a Congressional Budget Office review: “CBO confirmed our law cut premiums by removing ineligible recipients — including illegal aliens and able-bodied young men who shouldn’t be there. That’s why our reform was a success.”

Stephanopoulos flatly disagreed: “The CBO did not say that about illegal immigrants.”

The debate comes as Trump’s White House leans hard on congressional Republicans to hold the line. Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that Democrats are trying to resurrect Biden-era loopholes.

“They want to bring back the emergency healthcare expansions for illegal aliens and that mass parole program that made millions eligible for taxpayer-funded benefits,” Vance said. “President Trump shut that faucet off with one big, beautiful bill. We’re not going back.”

The shutdown leaves hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed while national parks, small-business loans, and military pay all hang in the balance. Democrats insist Republicans are to blame. Johnson argues Democrats could end the shutdown “in five minutes” if they drop their demand to subsidize illegals.

“This is about priorities,” the Speaker said. “Do we put Americans first, or do we cave to the radical left’s obsession with giving handouts to people who broke the law to be here? Republicans will not back down.”
