CBS News might be getting ready for its biggest shakeup in decades — and for once, conservatives could have a reason to tune in.
According to reports from Status News, new CBS Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss has her eye on Fox News’ Bret Baier for the CBS Evening News anchor chair. The move would mark a stunning crossover from cable’s leading conservative network to a broadcast outlet long seen as part of the liberal media establishment.
Baier — host of Special Report with Bret Baier and Fox’s chief political anchor — is one of the most respected figures in news, known for his professionalism and even-handed reporting. He’s reportedly among several names being discussed to replace current CBS co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, alongside internal contenders like Norah O’Donnell and Tony Dokoupil.
However, there’s one major hurdle: Baier is under contract with Fox until 2028, earning roughly $14 million per year. That means CBS would have to navigate some serious legal (and financial) challenges if Weiss truly wants him on board.
Weiss took the reins at CBS less than a month ago — and she’s already signaling a change. On her first day, she sent out a memo promising “journalism that holds both American political parties to equal scrutiny” and urging reporters to include “a wide spectrum of views and voices.”
That’s a far cry from the CBS of recent years, which media bias monitors like AllSides have long rated as left-leaning.
Weiss, who previously ran The Free Press and made headlines for calling out “cancel culture” and media groupthink, says she wants CBS to be “fair, fearless, and factual.” Her leadership style seems to have some in the industry nervous — and others hopeful that CBS might finally return to old-school journalism.
She’s already brought in Adam Rubenstein, another ex–New York Times editor known for standing up to the paper’s woke politics, and tapped her sister, Suzy Weiss, for CBS Mornings Plus. She’s also reportedly reached out to former CBS investigative reporter Catherine Herridge, who left after clashing with management last year — another sign Weiss may want to bring serious journalism back to the network.
Bret Baier isn’t a partisan firebrand — he’s a respected journalist who’s interviewed everyone from Donald Trump to Kamala Harris with sharp but fair questions. He’s not afraid to challenge either side, and his credibility with conservative viewers could help CBS rebuild trust with millions of Americans who’ve tuned out of the mainstream networks.
Baier has described having “off-the-record conversations and moments” with President Trump, offering him insights into the former president’s thinking. That kind of access and professionalism could give CBS the balance Weiss seems to be aiming for.
Whether Fox lets Baier go is another story. But one thing is clear: if Bari Weiss succeeds in bringing a journalist of his caliber and credibility to CBS, it would send a strong message that the network is serious about breaking free from its liberal echo chamber.
If that happens, CBS might finally become a place where Americans across the political spectrum — not just Democrats — can get their nightly news.

It’ll take years for CBS to regain journalistic respectability among the general public. I’ll have to see it happen to believe it.
