Man Dies Trying to Rescue Dog That Jumped from Boat Into Lake

A California man died after jumping into Lake Shasta to save a dog that had leapt from a moving boat, authorities said.

Geordan White, 60, of Redding, was on a boat at Lake Shasta on the morning of Sept. 11 when a dog suddenly jumped into the water.

White immediately went in after the animal in an attempt to bring it back to the boat.

But shortly after hitting the water, White suffered an unknown medical emergency and began calling for help, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.

Someone on the boat threw him a flotation device, and White was initially able to hold onto it.

Moments later, however, he lost his grip, slipped beneath the surface and did not come back up.

The dog was successfully rescued.

Deputies were called to the area near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch at about 9:12 a.m. after receiving a report of a possible drowning.

The sheriff’s office dive team, along with crews from Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, launched a search using boats and divers.

White’s body was eventually recovered Friday afternoon.

A post-mortem examination is expected to determine what caused the medical emergency before he went underwater.

“The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to the victim’s loved ones,” officials said.

Authorities also used the tragedy to remind boaters about the importance of wearing life jackets while on the water.

According to a 2024 U.S. Coast Guard report, drowning accounts for about 76 percent of all recreational boating deaths.

Between 400 and 500 boaters die from drowning each year, and roughly 87 percent of drowning victims were not wearing life jackets, the Coast Guard said.

The heartbreaking incident ended with the dog safely back on shore, but White did not survive his attempt to save the animal.
