Mystery Donor Who Gave President Trump $130M to Pay Military Revealed

A reclusive billionaire has reportedly stepped in to help U.S. troops during the ongoing government shutdown. Timothy Mellon, heir to the Mellon banking fortune and a longtime supporter of Republican causes, is believed to be the anonymous donor who gave $130 million to the government to continue paying military personnel.

President Trump revealed the gift Thursday, calling it the work of a “friend” and a “patriot” who “doesn’t really want the recognition.” Mellon has not publicly confirmed the donation.

Mellon, a railroad magnate with an estimated net worth near $1 billion, has been one of the country’s largest political donors. During the 2024 election cycle, he reportedly gave $100 million to support groups backing Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaigns.

Despite his political influence, Mellon keeps a low public profile. He lives primarily in Wyoming and rarely speaks to the media. His past charitable giving included support for causes like feminism, environmentalism, and Native American advocacy, though his recent political contributions lean heavily toward conservative initiatives.

The Pentagon confirmed it accepted the $130 million donation under its “general gift acceptance authority,” specifying that the funds were earmarked for service members’ salaries and benefits. Still, experts caution that the gift may not fully comply with federal law.

“The government can’t legally pay troops based solely on a private donation,” said David Super, a law and economics professor at Georgetown University. “If there’s no congressional appropriation for this, the gift can be held but not spent without approval from Congress.”

While generous, Mellon’s donation won’t solve the Pentagon’s funding challenges. The Defense Department spends hundreds of billions annually on troop salaries, and the Trump administration has already redirected $8 billion from research and development to cover payroll during the shutdown.

Critics have also raised ethical concerns. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said, “The American government should be funded by the American people, not anonymous mega-donor friends of the president. This is not how things should work in a democracy.”

For now, the donation provides temporary relief for service members, but it underscores both the unusual role private wealth can play in government operations and the ongoing financial pressures caused by the shutdown.
