While Harris pointed fingers at Trump, the real holdup for struggling families lies squarely with Senate Democrats. On Tuesday, they blocked a Republican-led continuing resolution for the 13th time, refusing to back a temporary budget fix unless it included immigration amnesty language and climate provisions.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told the New York Post that Democrats were “playing politics with people’s livelihoods.”

“The simplest way to end it and the simplest way to make sure that people are getting the food assistance they need is to pick up the bill and give us five votes,” Thune said after Tuesday’s failed 54–45 vote to end the shutdown.
