CNN Boss ‘Softens’ Coverage After V.I.P. West Wing Visit

CNN is under fire again—this time from its own newsroom—after reports surfaced that CEO Mark Thompson privately visited the Trump White House, then told staffers to back off criticism of the president’s East Wing renovations.

The visit reportedly happened last Wednesday. By Thursday morning, according to insiders, Thompson was urging CNN reporters to “ease up” on their coverage of the White House demolition—a move many inside the network are calling suspicious and politically convenient.

“This caught people off guard,” said a longtime CNN producer who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We’re supposed to be watchdogs, not lapdogs.”

At the heart of the controversy is President Donald Trump’s $300 million renovation project—an enormous 90,000-square-foot gilded ballroom that has replaced the historic East Wing, including the First Lady’s office and the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.

The teardown shocked preservationists and historians alike, with figures like Chelsea Clinton calling it a “wrecking ball to our heritage,” and Patti Davis, daughter of President Ronald Reagan, labeling it “heartbreaking.”

But President Trump has defended the project as a necessary update to the executive mansion.

“We’re not just restoring the White House—we’re making it beautiful again,” Trump said at a recent press briefing. “People come from all over the world. They deserve to see something special, not just old marble and dusty hallways.”

Following his White House visit, Thompson allegedly told senior staff that CNN’s audience was “not that interested” in the East Wing demolition, according to reporting from the Status newsletter. The claim contradicted a recent YouGov poll showing that 53% of Americans oppose tearing down the East Wing, and just 24% support Trump’s ballroom design.

CNN denies the charge, calling the Status report “false and not fact-checked.” But the timing has raised eyebrows.

White House officials have not confirmed what was discussed during Thompson’s visit. But Status reports that part of the conversation focused on securing more Trump administration officials as guests for CNN’s upcoming digital platform—a move that may signal a strategic pivot as Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, looks for a buyer.

“The timing of this visit couldn’t be more convenient,” said media analyst Travis Whitmore. “If you’re selling a legacy news network under Trump’s administration, you don’t want to ruffle feathers in the Oval Office.”

Just weeks ago, Trump blasted CNN correspondent Kristen Holmes as “one of the worst reporters that you’ll ever see.” He also mocked the network’s ratings, saying, “CNN is dying like a dog.”

But insiders say the president has quietly acknowledged CNN’s efforts to moderate its tone in recent months.

“I’ll give them this—they’re trying,” Trump told conservative talk radio host Dan Rivers earlier this month. “They’re still fake, but maybe now they’re less fake.”

Even some within CNN are worried the network is moving too close to power.

“There’s always pressure when media execs get too cozy with the White House,” said former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez. “It’s a slippery slope. First, you cut coverage on a demolition. Next, you’re apologizing for war zones.”

Meanwhile, Thompson has defended his editorial approach, telling Mediaite that CNN “isn’t about being centrist, it’s about being fair-minded.”

But critics argue the sudden editorial silence over a $300 million presidential ballroom speaks louder than any mission statement.

As CNN braces for a potential ownership shakeup, speculation is swirling around tech mogul David Ellison, who is reportedly interested in acquiring the network. Analysts say Ellison is one of the few suitors likely to gain approval from Trump’s FCC.

“That’s the Trump card,” one insider told Status.

And that may explain Thompson’s sudden change of tone.

“This is bigger than a building,” said former White House aide Darren Halstead. “This is about whether the American press stands up to power—or sells out to stay on the air.”
