Six Dead After Perfume Factory is Reduced to Ashes in Deadly Explosion

A perfume factory near Istanbul became a fiery death trap on Saturday morning, killing six workers and injuring at least four more in a devastating blaze that ripped through the industrial town of Dilovasi.

The fire broke out around 9 a.m. local time on November 8 at a facility in the Mimar Sinan neighborhood of Dilovasi, about 43 miles east of Istanbul. According to Turkish outlets CNN Turk and Sabah, the blaze started after a series of explosions were heard inside the plant, sending workers fleeing as flames tore through the building.

“It all happened so fast — there was an explosion, and suddenly people were screaming,” one survivor told local reporters. “I saw a man on fire. We tried to help him, but the flames were everywhere.”

Emergency crews raced to the scene, battling thick black smoke and intense heat. Firefighters managed to bring the inferno under control within an hour, but by then, much of the structure had already collapsed.

Victims and Aftermath

Officials confirmed that six people died inside the building. Four others were rushed to nearby hospitals, including one person now in critical condition in a burn unit.

“The situation is tragic,” said Kocaeli Province Governor Ilhami Aktas. “Our teams worked tirelessly to rescue the injured. We have launched a full investigation into the cause.”

Photos shared by local media show charred metal frames, shattered windows, and the skeletal remains of the factory — a once-bustling workplace turned into a scene of devastation.

Investigations and Arrests

Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc confirmed that a judicial investigation has been opened and that three individuals connected to the factory’s operations have been detained. Authorities are now examining whether poor safety standards or negligence played a role in the catastrophe.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a statement offering his “deepest condolences” to the victims’ families, vowing that “no detail will be overlooked” in determining how the tragedy occurred.

A Town Haunted by Industry

Dilovasi, an industrial hub home to chemical plants and refineries, has long been plagued by safety concerns and pollution issues. Locals say Saturday’s disaster is part of a wider pattern of danger in the region’s industrial sector.

“Factories here are always at risk,” said resident Selma Kaya, who lives two streets away from the site. “We’re used to hearing sirens, but this time, the smoke was so dark — it looked like the whole sky was on fire.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but experts note that perfume production involves highly flammable chemicals — a volatile mix that can turn deadly in seconds if mishandled.

As investigators sift through the debris, grief and anger are spreading across the small industrial town. “Those people went to work and never came home,” a relative of one of the victims said quietly outside the hospital. “Someone has to be held accountable.”
