A quiet family night celebrating a child’s birthday ended in unimaginable horror when a beloved father of nine was beaten to death in front of his wife and young children during a road rage confrontation in Castro Valley, California.
Authorities say 49-year-old Jason Elola, a father of nine and grandfather of four, had just left a birthday party for one of his sons on Saturday evening when a fender bender spiraled into deadly violence.
According to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Elola exchanged words with another driver after the minor collision. Witnesses say the verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical fight — right in front of his terrified family.
“Jason’s wife, Gabrielle, and several of their children were still inside the car,” a bystander told KRON4. “They were screaming for help. It was chaos.”
When first responders arrived, Elola was lying on the pavement with severe head injuries and blood pouring from his wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Authorities identified the other driver as Martin Davis Jr., 37. Davis initially fled the scene but later called the California Highway Patrol, admitting he was involved and returning to the site of the fight, police said.
“Preliminary information indicates that a physical altercation occurred between Elola and Davis following what is believed to be a road rage-related incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Davis was booked into Santa Rita Jail, though officials have not yet announced what charges he will face.
Those who knew Elola say he was a devoted husband, father, and community fixture who poured his energy into running a local pumpkin patch and Christmas tree farm in Tracy, a family tradition that drew generations of visitors every holiday season.
“Jason was the heart of our family — a kind, generous, and loving man who brought laughter and warmth wherever he went,” his family wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to support his widow and children. “His absence is deeply felt by all who knew him.”
Elola’s sister, Wendy Hernandez, described him as a lifelong local hero of sorts — a man who could never walk down the street without stopping to greet someone by name.
“Castro Valley was where we grew up,” she said. “Everybody knows everybody, and Jason knew every single person by first and last name. That was his thing.”
Elola leaves behind his wife Gabrielle and their nine children — Maria, Angel, Jordan, Brenden, Liana, Josh, Aiden, Allisandra, and Aliyah — as well as four grandchildren.
Neighbors have begun leaving flowers and candles near the crash site. “He was the type of person who would stop to help you fix your flat tire, no questions asked,” one friend told KTVU. “It’s heartbreaking to think he lost his life to something so senseless.”
California has seen a disturbing rise in road rage assaults in recent years. According to CHP data, incidents involving violent confrontations after traffic collisions have nearly doubled since 2020 — many triggered by minor driving disputes that escalate into deadly encounters.
As investigators piece together what went wrong that night, the Elola family is left clinging to memories of the man they say was their rock.
“He loved his kids more than anything in the world,” Gabrielle told friends. “He died protecting them.”
