Elderly Woman Miraculously Survives After Giant Tree Smashes Through Her Apartment

Talk about a close call! A 70-year-old North Carolina woman says she’s lucky to be alive after a massive tree came crashing straight through her second-floor apartment — while she was sitting on her bed.

Lenore Richardson was in her Charlotte home at the Regal Oaks apartments when the unthinkable happened. One second, everything was normal — the next, a huge tree split through her roof, trapping her beneath rubble.

“I have to keep telling myself, even though you lost everything, you’re still here,” she told WSOC. “I tried to push it up, but it was just too heavy. I thought I wasn’t gonna make it.”

Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to rescue her after she was pinned inside her bedroom. Miraculously, she walked away with only scrapes and bruises — but the emotional scars are still raw.

Richardson says her 3-month-old grandson kept her fighting. “I just thought, I have to see him. I can’t not let him know who I am.”

Photos from the aftermath show her apartment completely crushed under the weight of the fallen tree — an image that’s hard to believe she survived.

Local officials say homeowners who lose property in a disaster like this can reach out to FEMA for help with repairs or rebuilding.

As for Lenore, she’s just grateful to be breathing. “I lost everything,” she said, “but I didn’t lose my life.”
