Plane Carrying 4 U.S. Congressmen Makes ‘Emergency’ Landing

A routine American Airlines flight carrying four members of Congress turned dramatic Tuesday afternoon when a “disruptive passenger” forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in Kansas City.

Flight 1218 was en route from Phoenix to Washington D.C. when, just over two hours into the journey, the crew announced an unscheduled stop. According to Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ), who was on board, the flight also included three Arizona Republicans — Eli Crane, Andy Biggs, and Paul Gosar.

“We’re making an emergency stop in Kansas City to remove a disruptive passenger,” Stanton posted on X (formerly Twitter). “None of my colleagues is the disruptor.”

Passengers said the incident began when a woman in a red coat became agitated mid-flight. Video taken by fellow traveler Adam Burtner shows police boarding the plane after landing and escorting the woman away as she yelled, “Sorry folks, we live in a fascist state!”

Burtner later claimed online that the woman had taken a photo of one of the lawmakers and refused to delete it. “She said she took a picture of someone and they didn’t want her to tweet it,” he wrote.

The plane remained grounded for roughly 40 minutes while authorities handled the situation.

Kansas City officials later confirmed that police were called to remove the passenger but did not arrest her.

“The individual was not arrested and was escorted back to the ticket counter area to book another flight,” a city spokesperson told reporters. No additional details were provided about what led to her removal.

Rep. Paul Gosar, never one to miss a political jab, quipped in an email to PEOPLE, “After 43 days of the Schumer shutdown causing countless air traffic delays and cancellations, I can understand how a passenger might get a tad squirrelly.”

Rep. Stanton thanked authorities for their professionalism, adding, “On a serious note, thank you Kansas City police for handling the situation without incident.”

American Airlines confirmed the emergency diversion in a statement to local station KSHB: “Law enforcement met the flight and removed the customer. The flight later re-departed for DCA, where it landed normally. We thank our customers for their patience and our crew members for their professionalism.”

According to flight tracker data, the Airbus A321 reached Washington D.C. just after 10 p.m. — in time for all four lawmakers to cast their votes on the bill to end the nation’s longest government shutdown.

The measure passed the House 222-209, marking a rare bipartisan moment after weeks of gridlock. Six Democrats crossed party lines to back the Republican-led plan.

While no one was injured during the flight disturbance, the bizarre mid-air drama added one more headline to an already chaotic week in Washington.

“It’s not every day you see police board your plane at 30,000 feet,” one passenger told KSHB. “But hey — it’s D.C. season. Nothing surprises me anymore.”
