A former Phoenix television anchor once known for her polished newsroom delivery is now headed to one of America’s most notorious federal prisons — sharing grounds with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.
Stephanie Hockridge, 42, was sentenced Friday to 10 years in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $63 million in restitution after a jury found her guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Prosecutors say she masterminded a massive scam exploiting pandemic-era relief money.
According to the Justice Department, Hockridge and her partners used fake payroll records, falsified bank statements, and doctored tax forms to secure fraudulent loans under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) — a government effort meant to save struggling small businesses during the COVID-19 shutdown.
Hockridge was once a familiar face to Phoenix viewers as an anchor for KNXV-TV, where she covered everything from breaking news to community features. But when the pandemic hit, she swapped broadcasting for banking — co-founding a company called Blueacorn, which promised to help small business owners secure emergency funding.
What appeared to be a lifeline quickly turned into a gold rush.
Federal investigators found that Hockridge’s company prioritized so-called “VIPPP” clients — high-value borrowers who allegedly received faster approvals and larger loans — while regular applicants were left waiting.
Internal messages later uncovered by the House Select Subcommittee showed Hockridge instructing staff to delete smaller loan requests to make room for big-ticket clients. “We have to focus on the whales,” she allegedly wrote in one exchange obtained by congressional investigators.
Prosecutors painted Hockridge as the face of pandemic profiteering.
“She used the desperation of American small business owners as a get-rich-quick scheme,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Pfister during sentencing. “This wasn’t a victimless crime — this was theft from taxpayers.”
Court filings reveal that Hockridge and her associates took in millions in “processing fees” and kickbacks from borrowers, pocketing a percentage of the loan amounts that were supposed to keep employees on payrolls.
Hockridge’s legal team insists the operation began with good intentions.
“She truly believed she was building something to help small businesses survive,” defense attorney Leland Collins told reporters. “The system was chaotic, and mistakes were made. But Stephanie is not a criminal mastermind.”
In a statement before sentencing, Hockridge said, “Blueacorn was born out of chaos. We were trying to help — and I lost control of what it became.”
Hockridge will serve her time at the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, a minimum-security facility known for housing high-profile white-collar inmates.
The prison also holds Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted accomplice of financier Jeffrey Epstein; Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes; and former “Real Housewives” star Jennifer Shah.
A former corrections officer at Bryan described the facility as “a place where disgraced elites rub elbows.” “It’s not as rough as Rikers,” he said, “but make no mistake — you lose everything the moment you walk through those gates.”
Born and raised in Kansas City, Hockridge built her career as a journalist before pivoting into entrepreneurship in 2020. Her downfall mirrors that of many pandemic-era fraudsters who exploited the federal loan system, which experts estimate lost more than $200 billion to fraud and waste.
“She’s one of hundreds who saw a loophole and ran with it,” said former federal prosecutor Lisa Brody. “But what makes her story stand out is the contrast — a trusted journalist turned white-collar criminal.”
Neither Hockridge’s attorney nor the Bureau of Prisons returned requests for comment.
As of Friday, she is expected to report to Bryan Prison by December 10.
Her former colleagues in Phoenix remain stunned. One ex-producer told The Arizona Republic, “We used to joke that Stephanie was the calm in every storm. Now she’s the headline.”

From a friend: \”The Muslim religion is the fastest growing religion per capita in the United States , especially in the minority races. Last month I attended a training. During the training session there was a presentation by three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who each explained their beliefs. I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to say. The Muslim gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video. After the presentations, time was provided for questions and answers. When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Muslim and asked: \’Please, correct me if I\’m wrong, but I understand that most Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [Holy war] against the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (which is a command to all Muslims) they are assured of a place in heaven. If that\’s the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?\’ There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, he replied, \” Nonbelievers\” I responded, \’So, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that correct?\’ The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.\’ He sheepishly replied, \’Yes.\’ I then stated, \’Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine The Pope commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same in order to guarantee them a place in heaven!\’ The Muslim was speechless. I continued, \’I also have a problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me! Let me ask you a question: Would you rather have your Allah, who tells you to kill me in order for you to go to heaven, or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to heaven and He wants you to be there with me?\’ You could have heard a pin drop. Needless to say, the organizers and/or promoters of the \’Diversification\’ training seminar were not happy with my way of dealing with the Islamic Imam, and exposing the truth about the Muslims\’ beliefs. In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in the US. to elect the President. I think everyone in the U.S. should be required to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on! This is your chance to make a difference. Brian Canfield
