Putin’s Mansion Hit by Drone Strike as Trump’s Peace Deal Hangs by a Thread

Russia erupted in fury Monday after claiming Ukraine launched a massive drone strike aimed at President Vladimir Putin’s luxury state mansion in the Novgorod region — an alleged assassination attempt that could shatter Donald Trump’s fragile peace push.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared that “91 long-range drones” targeted Putin’s compound overnight, calling it a “terrorist attack” meant to send a message to Moscow’s top leadership.

“All the drones were destroyed by our air defense systems,” Lavrov said with visible anger during a press briefing in Moscow. “There were no casualties — but the intent was clear. Ukraine tried to strike at the heart of Russia’s sovereignty.”

State-run media quickly aired footage of explosions lighting up the night sky — though no independent verification has emerged.

The stunning accusation landed less than 24 hours after U.S. President Donald Trump triumphantly told reporters at Mar-a-Lago that his talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had brought peace negotiations “90 percent of the way there.”

The timing was explosive. Trump, who has branded himself as “the global peacemaker,” had spent the weekend praising both leaders for their “commitment to ending this terrible war.”

But inside Washington, aides now fear the Kremlin’s new claim could blow the entire deal apart. “If this attack is real, we’re on the edge of something catastrophic,” one senior U.S. official warned. “If it’s fake, it’s pure Russian theater designed to derail diplomacy.”

Lavrov was quick to link the alleged drone barrage to the ongoing peace process, describing it as a “direct provocation” against Russia’s goodwill.

“We know who authorized this,” he said darkly. “Such reckless actions will not go unanswered. The targets for retaliation have already been chosen.”

Yet Lavrov insisted Russia would not walk away from the negotiating table — at least not yet. “We remain committed to discussions with the United States,” he said. “But our patience is not limitless.”

Behind the scenes, Russian insiders told TASS that Moscow is “furious” Trump continues to treat Zelensky as a negotiating equal, rather than a defeated party.

Zelensky wasted no time hitting back. In a furious post on X, he called Moscow’s story “a total fabrication designed to justify fresh missile strikes on Kyiv.”

“Russia is at it again,” he wrote. “They invent attacks to excuse their own aggression. Typical Russian lies. Ukraine does not target diplomacy — Russia destroys it.”

He also directly appealed to the American public. “We are working with President Trump’s team to bring peace closer. We need truth and unity — not more Russian deception.”

At the core of the negotiations lies the Donbas — a war-torn region that has already consumed more than a decade of bloodshed.

Moscow is demanding full control over the last Ukrainian-held territories. Zelensky has refused, insisting any decision on ceding land must be decided by a public vote. But for a referendum to happen, Ukraine says it needs a ceasefire — something Russia has flatly rejected.

“The Kremlin wants surrender, not peace,” a Western diplomat told The Guardian. “And now this so-called drone strike gives them an excuse to walk away whenever they want.”

If the alleged drone strike turns out to be real, it would mark the boldest Ukrainian attack yet on Putin personally. If it’s fake — as Kyiv insists — it’s one of the most dangerous propaganda gambits of the war.

Either way, Trump’s carefully choreographed peace mission is hanging by a thread.

“The entire world is watching this moment,” said one White House insider. “If the talks collapse, we could be looking at the start of something far worse than anything we’ve seen since 2022.”

  1. IF Russia shot down all the drones as they stated, they have no evidence there were drones targeting the mansion. Any damage they may trot out would have been caused by themselves. Forgive me if I don’t believe them.🤭

  2. My soul wishes Trump were not in charge.  His ties to the Soviets will make it impossible for him to be impartial.  A full out war between Russia and Ukraine is possible.  Where that might end is hard to say.  It would depend on the Western allies having a cohesive response to Moscow.  Larry Schlatter
