Russia Threatens ‘Decisive Response’ as Drones Spark NATO Panic

Vladimir Putin’s chief diplomat is turning up the heat on Europe as drones and fighter jets rattle NATO airspace, sending European leaders into full-blown panic.

Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s long-time foreign minister and Putin’s trusted attack dog, vowed that Moscow would deliver a “decisive response” to any strike against Russian territory. His comments came just as nervous NATO states reported drones over Denmark’s top military bases and fighter jets slipping into Estonian skies.

“We have no intention of attacking Europe or NATO,” Lavrov declared at a press briefing in Moscow. “But any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response.”

Over the weekend, Denmark scrambled to contain what its defense ministry described as a “systematic operation.” Drones were spotted hovering over Skrydstrup Air Base, the Jutland Dragoon Regiment, and Karup Air Base — the country’s largest military installation.

Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard tried to calm fears, calling the flyovers “an attempt to sow fear and division.” But he admitted that Copenhagen is considering legislation allowing military and civilian operators to shoot drones down on sight.

Neighboring states — including Germany, Norway, and Lithuania — reported similar incursions, stoking suspicions that the Kremlin is probing NATO’s defenses ahead of larger provocations.

“This is what hybrid warfare looks like,” one senior Polish defense official told reporters. “Moscow uses drones and misinformation to test our resolve, but we are ready to respond.”

While European officials accuse Russia of orchestrating hybrid attacks, Moscow insists the drones were either Ukrainian or simply “knocked off course.” Belarus quickly backed the Kremlin’s story.

President Trump, who has long pressed NATO allies to boost defense spending, has reportedly told aides that these incidents prove his point. “Europe has to step up and protect its own backyard,” one senior White House adviser told Fox News on Sunday. “The American taxpayer cannot forever foot the bill for NATO’s weak response.”

The Pentagon has confirmed it is “closely monitoring” the situation but stopped short of saying U.S. forces would be directly involved. Trump himself has not commented publicly, though sources say he has urged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to keep forces on “heightened alert” in the region.

The tensions escalated further when Russia’s ambassador to France warned that downing a Russian plane “would be war.” The chilling remark sent shivers through European capitals already rattled by last week’s temporary closure of multiple Danish airports during what authorities described as a “hybrid attack.”

In response, several EU members are now backing a “drone wall” — a continent-wide defense shield meant to protect against future intrusions. Poland has already expanded its rules of engagement, authorizing its military to shoot down any hostile drones crossing into its territory from Ukraine.

Lavrov added fuel to the fire, accusing NATO of waging a “real war” against Russia by supplying Ukraine with weapons and intelligence. “The West is already directly involved,” he said, hinting at Moscow’s readiness to escalate further.

For many Americans, the unfolding crisis is a stark reminder of the stakes. Russia’s war in Ukraine has dragged into its fourth year, and European leaders remain divided over strategy. Trump’s critics accuse him of being too friendly toward Putin, but his supporters say his tough-love approach to NATO is exactly what’s needed.

“Europe is finally realizing that Trump was right all along,” said retired Col. Douglas MacGregor, a frequent Trump ally. “You can’t keep poking the Russian bear without consequences.”
