King Charles is said to be deeply uncomfortable — and even horrified — by Prince Harry’s latest public comments targeting President Donald Trump, with palace insiders warning the timing couldn’t be worse for already-delicate international relations.
According to sources close to the royal household, the king was especially troubled by Harry weighing in just as diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and the United States are front and center.
“This is diplomacy, not podcast politics,” a palace insider told royal commentator Rob Shuter, making clear that while Charles understands the emotional weight behind Harry’s words, he believes they crossed an important line.
The tension stems from remarks Harry made in response to Trump’s comments about NATO and Afghanistan. Drawing on his own military service, the duke pushed back publicly, saying he lost friends during his time overseas and emphasizing the human cost of the conflict.
“I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there,” Harry said, noting that the UK lost 457 service members. He added that countless families were forever changed, arguing those sacrifices deserved to be discussed with honesty and respect.
While the sentiments may resonate with many, palace sources say the king was alarmed by the timing. Britain and the United States remain one of the world’s closest alliances, and Charles is expected to visit Washington, D.C., later this year alongside Queen Camilla as part of the United States’ 250th birthday celebrations. Trump, who has previously hosted the royal family and reportedly enjoys a cordial relationship with the king and queen, is expected to play host during the visit.
“Harry’s comments make an already sensitive situation far trickier,” another source said. “The king can’t clap back — even if he agrees.”
As a constitutional monarch, Charles is required to remain publicly neutral on political matters, especially when it comes to foreign leaders. Speaking out against a sitting U.S. president would be unthinkable, insiders stress.
Harry’s remarks also revive long-standing friction between the duke and Trump. The president has previously taken shots at Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, questioning Harry’s visa status and openly criticizing Meghan. In one past comment, Trump said he wouldn’t pursue deportation, adding that Harry had “enough problems with his wife.”
Trump has also repeatedly described Harry as “whipped,” a comment he reiterated during a past interview with Piers Morgan, where he made clear he was no fan of Meghan.
The controversy adds to the broader pattern of Harry and Meghan’s political involvement since stepping back from royal duties and relocating to California in 2020. That same year, the couple urged Americans to vote in what they called “the most important election of our lifetime,” encouraging voters to reject hate speech and misinformation — remarks widely interpreted as criticism of Trump at the time.
Although Joe Biden won the 2020 election, Trump returned to the White House in 2024, defeating Kamala Harris and reclaiming the presidency.
For King Charles, insiders say the issue isn’t just what Harry said — it’s when and how he said it.
