Former President Barack Obama is urging Americans to “pay attention” after two fatal shootings involving federal agents in Minnesota triggered a wave of national scrutiny over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategy.
His comments come as Republicans defend the need for strong federal action at the border and within interior cities, arguing that the situation in Minnesota reflects how dangerous these operations have become for both officers and civilians.
The first incident occurred on Jan. 7, when 34-year-old mother of three, Renee Good, was shot by an ICE officer during a planned enforcement stop.
Three weeks later, 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti was killed while recording immigration activity on his phone. Federal agents said he appeared to pose a threat. A preliminary report later stated there was no clear evidence he brandished a weapon, leading to calls for more clarity about what exactly happened.
Neighbors say tensions have been growing as large-scale immigration operations move deeper into residential areas. “People are confused and scared,” said local resident David Roman. “No one knows what the agents expect from us during these operations.”
While Obama rarely comments directly on Trump’s policies, he weighed in forcefully this week.
“More and more Americans are voicing their concerns,” he posted on X. “But it’s important to understand the broader implications of what this administration is doing, and the threat it poses to the basic freedoms of every American.”
He urged the public to “engage” and “stay vigilant,” saying the country is facing “a defining moment.”
In a second post, Obama shared a podcast that questioned whether the intensity of Minnesota’s immigration enforcement signals a shift in the nature of federal authority.
Roughly 3,000 ICE and CBP agents are currently operating in Minnesota as part of Trump’s interior enforcement push. Supporters say the surge is necessary to restore public safety and address years of unchecked illegal immigration.
Critics, however, argue that the scale and speed of the operation raise civil liberties concerns.
New York Times columnist Ezra Klein said the current strategy “creates conditions for tragedy,” noting its size and urgency.
Republican lawmakers rejected comparisons to authoritarianism. “This is about enforcing the law,” said Rep. John Fulmer (R-SD). “When officers enter high-risk environments, mistakes can happen, and they must be reviewed. But enforcement is not optional.”
The Trump administration defended the agents involved.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Pretti was “moving aggressively toward officers.” Senior adviser Stephen Miller described him as “a threat” in early statements.
When asked about those comments after the preliminary report, one administration official said, “We make decisions based on the information we have at the time. The investigations will reveal the truth.”
ICE officials also maintain that the officer who shot Good acted lawfully under department policy.
Speaking on The Will Cain Show, President Trump called both incidents “terrible.”
“I don’t like what happened,” he said. “Nobody wants to see people get hurt. But these situations are dangerous. Officers have to make split-second decisions. We’re going to get all the facts.”
Trump emphasized he intends to “de-escalate the situation” in Minneapolis while still keeping “law and order front and center.”
In a joint statement, Barack and Michelle Obama said Pretti’s death should be “a wake-up call.”
But Republicans quickly countered that the conversation must include officer safety.
“These men and women are in harm’s way every day,” said Sen. Marsha Kelleher (R-TN). “We should examine these cases, absolutely. But we also can’t undermine the people trying to protect American communities.”
Protests have grown across Minneapolis. Civil rights groups and law enforcement unions are demanding full transparency. Families of the victims are asking for independent reviews.
“Everyone wants answers,” said Minneapolis pastor Rev. Lorne Adams. “And they want to know whether these tragedies could have been prevented.”
With investigations underway and federal operations continuing, Minnesota has become the center of a national debate—one balancing enforcement, safety, civil liberties, and the sharp political divide over immigration.

HOW PRECIOUS , THIS CRAP COMING FROM AN ILLEGAL MUSLIM THAT GOT ELECTED BY COMPUTER FRAUD !! THE VERY ONE THAT FLOODED OUR COUNTRY WITH ILLEGALS , PAID THEM \” BILLIONS \” FOR A TRAITOR , PROTECTED CLINTONS FROM PRISON !! FK YOU OBAMA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not interested in anything Barry has to say about anything. Nothing about him is real. He infiltrated our government without being a US citizen, pretending he was a middle of the road democrat even though he’s a communist. His eight years as president helped ISIS grow and America decline. He apologized to the world for America’s strength and defunded our military. If his skin was white, he never would have been elected.
He’s looking
I never believe anything Obama says. He’s is a liar and a traitor.
he is inciting violence
>
I agree with him the at this should be a wake up call, to all local and state governments on the need to cooperate with ICE. If Frey and Walz (and I guess Obama) were cooperative and not so vocal in their opposition to removing dangerous illegal aliens from their areas these things would not be happening. These folks need to face charges of obstruction.
I still say he’s the one that started BLM. He told them to stand up against Authority. Sad thing is that most people of color wanted nothing to do with that.
I p[refer to stop calling them ICE but prefer to call them by their actions. The Gestapo!! Dr. Schlatter
And in what way are ICE or the Border Patrol in anyway like the Gestapo?
America had better pay attention and stop all the Democrat trash before the country is gone!
What hell. Does TRASHY. DEMS. LIKE Obama and. HALF wit. Biden Know. They caused this PROBLEM
Obama was called Deporter in Chief when he deported thousands while in office and the left did not RIOT back then.
