Savannah Guthrie made a heartbreaking public plea on Saturday, telling the people who allegedly abducted her 84-year-old mother, Nancy, that the family is ready to pay whatever ransom is being demanded.
In a video released by the NBC anchor and her relatives, the Guthries speak directly to the kidnappers, saying they received the earlier message and will meet the dollar amount requested. It’s the most direct communication the family has made since the terrifying ordeal began.
Nancy was last seen on January 31, after she was dropped off at her Tucson home. Days later, news outlets received an alleged ransom note with two deadlines. The first passed on Thursday evening, and the second looms on Monday, February 9.
The family had previously asked for proof of life before agreeing to pay, and it’s still unclear whether they ever received it. But the urgency and tone of this new video suggests they believe the threat is real.
On Friday, Harvey Levin analyzed clues from the alleged ransom note and mapped out how far Nancy could have been taken. Authorities have not announced any suspects, persons of interest, or possible vehicles tied to the case.
Nancy’s age and medical needs add even more urgency. She has a pacemaker and requires daily medication, and the family has no idea if she’s receiving it.
Police did arrest one man accused of sending fake ransom messages to the Guthries, but investigators say the real abductors have not been identified.
The clock is now ticking toward Monday’s deadline.
