Young Man Dies After Railing “Gave Way” When Leaning on Apartment Balcony

A routine night turned into a nightmare for one family after a 23-year-old man plunged to his death from an apartment balcony when the railing he leaned on suddenly collapsed.

Now, his grieving parents say the tragedy should never have happened — and they want to know who is responsible.

Joshua Robbins died on Jan. 29 after falling five stories from a residential building in London. According to his family, the young man stepped outside his apartment after hearing a buzzer he believed signaled the arrival of his pizza delivery.

Moments later, he was dead.

His parents, Will Robbins and Fiona Jane Garrett, say the fatal fall occurred because a safety railing that was supposed to protect residents failed catastrophically.

“Josh assumed it was his pizza delivery,” the couple said in a statement. “He went out of the front door onto the communal landing by the lift area to see if it had arrived. As he leaned over the railing, it gave way.”

The sudden collapse sent Robbins plunging five floors to the ground below.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but there was nothing they could do.

“The paramedics arrived very quickly,” Garrett later told Sky News. “But they said his injuries weren’t compatible with life.”

The tragedy unfolded in the same building where Robbins had been staying with his father at Thurston Dwellings, an apartment complex on Newton Street. His father reportedly heard the commotion and ran down the stairs after the fall.

What he saw next left him devastated.

“Josh’s father witnessed the immediate aftermath of his son’s fall,” the family said. “No parent should ever have to experience something like that. He is deeply traumatized.”

Family members insist Robbins was not acting recklessly. They say he didn’t climb or sit on the barrier. He simply leaned over it — something countless residents likely do every day.

“A safety barrier that was meant to prevent a fall gave way, with catastrophic consequences,” the parents said.

The Metropolitan Police have opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities say the probe remains in its early stages as specialists examine what caused the railing to fail.

Investigators are now working with structural experts to determine whether corrosion, poor maintenance, or a design flaw played a role.

“Investigators are liaising with expert witnesses, including a forensic structural engineer,” police said in a statement. “They are also interviewing residents and witnesses.”

Officials say the coroner has been notified and a full report will be issued once the investigation concludes.

Meanwhile, Robbins’ parents are pressing housing officials for answers.

They have asked when the railing was last inspected and whether any previous safety concerns were reported. They also want to know if the housing association responsible for the building took proper steps to ensure the structure was safe.

Their son, they say, had his entire life ahead of him.

“He had a smile that lit up every room,” his parents said. “He was kind, funny, charismatic, and instantly likeable.”

Friends described Robbins as someone who made people feel welcome wherever he went. His parents say he was full of plans and dreams for the future.

Now they are turning their grief into action.

The family has launched a campaign called “No More Falls,” calling for mandatory safety inspections of residential railings, balconies, and barriers.

“Safety barriers exist to save lives,” they said. “When they fail, families deserve answers.”

The housing association responsible for the building called Robbins’ death “extremely sad and distressing.”

Chief executive Pippa Fleetwood-Read said the organization is cooperating fully with investigators.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to his parents, family, and friends at this very difficult time,” she said.

But for Robbins’ mother, condolences are not enough.

Garrett revealed she even received a letter from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose political district includes the building where the fatal fall occurred.

Still, she says sympathy alone won’t bring justice.

“I don’t want platitudes,” Garrett said. “I want real action.”

The family has also created a GoFundMe page to help cover legal and investigative costs as they push for accountability.

Their message is simple: what happened to Joshua should never happen again.

“Joshua’s life mattered,” Garrett said. “So his death matters even more.”
