Charlie Kirk Assassination Case Takes Darker Turn as Judge Unseals Explosive ATF Report

The case against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk, just took another dramatic turn — and the newly unsealed details are only fueling outrage.

A Utah judge has now unsealed a federal ATF ballistics report tied to the September 2025 killing, shedding new light on the evidence prosecutors say links Robinson directly to the rifle used in the attack. While the report did not conclusively match a damaged bullet fragment to the suspected murder weapon, it did confirm that a spent casing recovered in the case was fired from the rifle authorities say Robinson used.

And that is far from the only evidence stacking up against him.

According to prosecutors, separate forensic testing found DNA consistent with Robinson’s on the rifle, on a towel, and on three of the four rounds loaded inside the weapon. In a case that has already stunned conservatives across the country, those details are likely to intensify the pressure on Robinson as prosecutors build what appears to be an increasingly damning case.

The newly released ATF report had previously been discussed in court, but the document itself had remained under seal until now. Judge Tony Graf ruled there was no legitimate reason to keep it hidden from the public, saying it did not contain any private or inflammatory material.

The report examined a damaged bullet jacket fragment along with four lead fragments. Because the bullet reportedly shattered after striking bone when it hit Kirk in the neck, investigators were unable to make a fully conclusive match between that fragment and the rifle. Law enforcement sources familiar with the case have said that kind of result is not unusual in shootings involving severe bullet damage on impact.

Even so, the ATF did determine that a .30-06 cartridge casing recovered in the investigation had been fired from the rifle identified as Robinson’s Mauser — a major point for the prosecution.

Experts say the defense should not celebrate too soon.

Retired FBI supervisory agent Jason Pack told Fox News Digital that the inconclusive fragment finding is not some blockbuster win for Robinson’s side, but simply one piece of forensic evidence that could not be fully resolved because of the condition of the bullet. He said the prosecution is now working to strengthen that gap with help from the FBI and more advanced technology.

In other words, this is not a collapsing case. It is a case still moving forward with a mountain of other evidence already in play.

Robinson is accused of gunning down Kirk during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in September 2025. Prosecutors say he climbed onto a rooftop across the courtyard from where Kirk was speaking, took up a prone sniper position, and fired a single shot from his grandfather’s Mauser rifle into the crowd of roughly 3,000 people gathered below.

The bullet struck Kirk in the neck, killing him in front of horrified onlookers.

Investigators say they found marks on the gravel rooftop consistent with someone lying in position to fire the shot, including impressions believed to have been left by elbows, knees, and feet. Police later recovered the rifle wrapped in a blanket in a wooded area near campus.

Prosecutors have also pointed to text messages Robinson allegedly sent to his romantic partner, Lance Twiggs, in the hours after the killing. In one message, Robinson allegedly wrote that he was “stuck in Orem for a little while longer yet” and that he still needed to “grab my rifle.” Twiggs is reportedly cooperating with investigators and has not been charged.

That is not all. A defense motion filed under seal in January had asked the court to block the government from doing more testing until a defense expert could first examine and photograph the evidence. But with the ATF report now public, attention is once again turning to the broader picture — and it is a grim one.

This was not some random act of street violence. Prosecutors are painting the picture of a calculated political assassination targeting one of the most recognizable conservative voices in America.

Robinson is expected back in court Friday, where he will seek to keep news cameras out of future proceedings. If convicted on the top charge of aggravated murder, he could face the death penalty.

And as more evidence spills into public view, the case is beginning to look even more chilling than many first feared.
