Florida Democrat Quits Congress Amid Shocking Accusations

Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick abruptly resigned from Congress on Tuesday, stepping down just moments before the House was set to weigh punishment in a stunning ethics case that had already rocked Capitol Hill.

Her exit came after a House panel found clear and convincing evidence of 25 violations tied to campaign finance and reporting rules, with the possibility of censure, fines, or even expulsion hanging over her.

The timing made the move impossible to ignore. Instead of facing a formal public rebuke from the House, Cherfilus-McCormick walked away and blasted the process as a “witch hunt,” arguing that her new attorney was not given enough time to prepare a defense.

But by the time she resigned, the ethics investigation had already dragged on for two years, producing 59 subpoenas, 28 witness interviews, and a review of more than 33,000 pages of documents.

The Florida lawmaker’s political crisis goes far beyond House rules. She is also facing federal criminal charges accusing her of stealing roughly $5 million in disaster relief funds that Florida mistakenly overpaid to her family’s healthcare business during the COVID era.

Prosecutors say that money was later funneled through businesses and relatives and used to help bankroll her 2022 congressional campaign, while some of it allegedly paid for luxury purchases, including a 3-carat yellow diamond ring. Cherfilus-McCormick has pleaded not guilty and insists she did nothing wrong.

Even before Tuesday’s resignation, support inside Washington appeared to be slipping. House Speaker Mike Johnson said last week that he believed the House would move to expel her, declaring that the facts were already “indisputable.”

Expulsion is one of the rarest punishments in House history and requires a two-thirds vote, which underscored just how serious the allegations had become.

Some Democrats and local allies urged caution, saying her district deserved stability and due process. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus also thanked her for her service.

But in the end, Cherfilus-McCormick chose to leave before the House could make its move, closing the book on one of the most explosive ethics scandals now haunting Congress.

  1. What does she care? Unless she’s forced to pay back the stolen funds, she just made out like a bandit.
