Canadian PM Welcomes Obama as ‘President’ During Toronto Trip (Video)

Former President Barack Obama sparked a political firestorm online after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly welcomed him to Toronto by referring to him as “President” — triggering outrage across MAGA circles and wild accusations of a so-called “coup” against President Donald Trump.

The controversy erupted Thursday after Carney posted a video greeting Obama ahead of the former commander-in-chief’s appearance at a Canadian think tank event in Toronto.

“Welcome back to Canada, President @BarackObama,” Carney wrote on X alongside footage of the two smiling and shaking hands as upbeat music played in the background.

Carney thanked Obama for joining “important conversations on how we can build a better and more just future,” but conservatives immediately zeroed in on one thing: the use of the title “President” instead of “former president.”

Within minutes, MAGA influencers and Trump loyalists flooded social media with angry reactions, accusing Obama of overstepping his role and attempting to undermine the current administration.

Far-right activist Laura Loomer led the charge with a viral post questioning why Obama was meeting with foreign leaders while Trump is serving as president.

“Why is Barack Hussein Obama meeting with world leaders while President Trump is in office?” Loomer wrote. “This is a coup.”

The phrase spread rapidly across conservative social media, with users claiming the Toronto appearance was part of a larger effort to sideline Trump on the world stage.

Conservative commentator Nick Sortor also lashed out online, warning Obama to “figure out his place” before he “ends up in prison for violating the Logan Act.”

The Logan Act is a little-used federal law that bars unauthorized private citizens from negotiating with foreign governments during disputes involving the United States. Critics online claimed Obama’s appearance somehow crossed that line, despite no evidence he was involved in diplomatic negotiations or policy discussions with Canadian officials.

“Trump is our President,” Sortor wrote. “You’ve been sidelined, Hussein.”

Others piled on with even more heated reactions.

“This piece of s— will get away with this trip. Logan Act! Lock him up!” one user posted.

Another added: “Obama is not President first off. Secondly this is a violation of the Logan Act.”

Much of the outrage appeared to center less on the actual event and more on Carney’s wording.

While former U.S. presidents are routinely addressed by their title as a courtesy — including Presidents Bush, Clinton, and Obama — critics claimed leaving out the word “former” was disrespectful to Trump and intentionally provocative.

“It’s FORMER President zero,” one user fumed online. “If he’s claiming to act on behalf of the American people in your ‘talks,’ he’s in violation of the Logan Act.”

Another commenter directly tagged Trump while replying to Carney: “So do you mean Barack Obama is still president since you just called him President Barack Obama? This should worry the U.S. a little.”

The online frenzy comes as tensions between the Trump administration and Canada remain high. Earlier this year, Carney publicly pushed back after Trump floated the idea of Canada becoming America’s “51st state,” insisting the country would never be “for sale.”

Now, Obama’s high-profile appearance north of the border has become the latest flashpoint in an already heated political climate — and MAGA world is making sure everyone hears about it.

  1. When will people realize, Obama is nothing more than what comes out the backside of a jackass?

  2. I think Obama should run for Prime Minister of Canada. I think Canadians would elect him hands-down

  3. Keep him in Canada and tell him to go do some Charity work, perhaps volunteer at the Mercy Ships. Tell him to stop whining.
