A decades-old CIA file is once again fueling wild speculation that one of history’s biggest secrets may still be buried beneath Egypt’s Great Sphinx — and conspiracy hunters are convinced the government knows more than it’s saying.
The resurfaced document, dated November 20, 1952, has exploded across social media after researchers spotted a mysterious reference to a “temple under Sphinx” buried inside a photographic inventory connected to the CIA.
Now, believers say the cryptic wording could point to the legendary “Hall of Records” — a rumored underground archive said to contain forbidden ancient texts, maps of lost civilizations, and knowledge hidden from humanity for thousands of years.
The declassified file reportedly references 11 rolls of black-and-white photographic negatives taken between July and December of 1950. While the document itself offers little explanation, online sleuths immediately went into overdrive.
“Secrets of humanity are hidden under the Sphinx,” one person declared online.
Another wrote: “The CIA clearly knew something was down there.”
Others accused Egyptian authorities of deliberately blocking excavations around the monument for decades to keep whatever lies beneath it from being exposed to the world.
The Great Sphinx, one of the most mysterious structures on Earth, has long been surrounded by theories involving hidden tunnels, secret chambers, and ancient technology lost to time. The Hall of Records legend has circulated for generations, with some claiming it holds evidence of a forgotten advanced civilization wiped out in a catastrophic event thousands of years ago.
But mainstream archaeologists continue to dismiss the claims.
Famous Egyptologist Zahi Hawass has repeatedly denied that any secret archive exists beneath the Sphinx. Hawass said extensive excavations have already been conducted around the monument and insisted nothing resembling the Hall of Records was ever found.
“The Sphinx has been thoroughly excavated,” Hawass previously said, adding that investigations beneath the structure revealed nothing extraordinary.
Still, the denials have only intensified suspicions among conspiracy theorists who believe authorities are hiding ancient discoveries from the public.
Some researchers claim the legendary Book of Thoth — a mythical text tied to the Egyptian god of wisdom — could be concealed beneath the structure. According to ancient lore, the sacred writings allegedly contain hidden knowledge capable of unlocking the secrets of the universe.
Others have pushed even more explosive theories.
Researcher Dr. Paul Warner has claimed the tomb of Jesus Christ, along with the Ark of the Covenant, may be hidden inside a sealed underground chamber beneath the Sphinx complex.
According to Warner, a tunnel known as the Southern Passageway may lead to man-made structures buried deep beneath the ancient site. He reportedly believes photographic and video evidence supports the existence of hidden chambers carved directly into the bedrock.
The Ark of the Covenant — the sacred chest described in biblical tradition as holding the Ten Commandments — has been the focus of treasure hunters and religious historians for centuries.
Warner also reportedly argued that the pyramids may hold direct ties to biblical history, even suggesting Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount near the ancient structures — a claim mainstream historians strongly dispute.
Despite the lack of hard evidence, fascination surrounding the Great Sphinx continues to grow as new theories spread online and old government files resurface.
And for many Americans skeptical of what governments and elite institutions choose to reveal, the mystery only deepens with every newly uncovered document.
