A quiet Long Island community is reeling after a 30-year-old mother of three was found dying inside a vehicle at a gas station — and less than 12 hours later, police arrested a man now charged with her murder.
Authorities say Juliann Bachmann, of Bellport, was discovered injured and unresponsive inside a car at a Speedway gas station in Yaphank early Saturday morning in what investigators are treating as a homicide.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, officers responded to the gas station on Horseblock Road just before 7:30 a.m. after reports of a woman in distress inside a vehicle.
When first responders arrived, they found Bachmann suffering from serious injuries. She was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk in Patchogue, but despite emergency efforts, she later died.
The shocking case took a dramatic turn Saturday night when police arrested 40-year-old Michael McHenry, also of Bellport, and charged him with second-degree murder.
McHenry was taken into custody shortly before 8:15 p.m. and held overnight ahead of his arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Investigators have not yet revealed how Bachmann died or what may have led to the deadly encounter. Police also have not confirmed whether Bachmann and McHenry knew each other prior to the incident.
The brutal killing has left many stunned, especially after photos of Bachmann smiling with friends and family began circulating online following news of her death.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Anyone with details related to the investigation is urged to contact the Suffolk County Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
