A 12-year-old sixth-grade boy died in a Yonkers school hallway Wednesday after choking during what authorities are now investigating as a possible social media challenge gone horribly wrong.
The child suffered a medical emergency around 11:40 a.m. inside Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School, according to Yonkers school officials. He became unresponsive before first responders rushed to the building and desperately tried to save him.
Despite their efforts, the boy was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Officials have not released the student’s name.
Authorities are now looking into whether the tragedy may have been connected to the so-called “One Bite” TikTok challenge, News 12 reported. The dangerous trend reportedly involves trying to cram as much food as possible into one bite.
Investigators are looking into whether the boy may have been eating a donut when he choked, according to the outlet.
Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said Thursday that detectives are reviewing every possibility.
“Anything about a TikTok challenge, anything about witness statements, the events leading up to this we’re going to investigate and we’re going to continue with the investigation from beginning to end,” Sapienza said at a news conference.
The horrifying incident did not happen in the cafeteria, according to Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Anibal Soler Jr. Instead, it unfolded on the fourth-floor hallway, where staff members immediately rushed in and tried to dislodge the food from the boy’s throat.
But the emergency ended in tragedy, leaving classmates, teachers and parents devastated.
“As police investigate the nature of the medical emergency, we remain focused on caring for his classmates, teachers and staff who are in terrible pain,” Soler said in a statement.
The superintendent described the sixth-grader as a beloved student whose sudden death has shaken the entire school.
“This young man was a bright light in the building,” Soler said. “Everybody loved him, everybody knew him. He was energy, he was joy.”
The case is now putting a spotlight on the dangers children face from viral social media trends, especially as parents and schools continue to struggle with the influence apps like TikTok have over young students.
What may have started as an online stunt now appears to have ended with a family grieving an unimaginable loss.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano called the boy’s death “heartbreaking” and said the entire city is mourning with the family.
“The death of a child is every parent’s worst nightmare, and our entire Yonkers community is grieving alongside this student’s family, classmates, teachers, and loved ones,” Spano said.
