Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton has died after a motorcycle crash during a family vacation in Thailand. She was just 25.
The accident happened on Wednesday, June 10, on Koh Samui, Thailand’s second-largest island and one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, according to the Bangkok Post, Thai Examiner and 7 News.
Local police said it was raining at the time of the crash, and poor weather conditions may have played a role.
Authorities also said Stapleton’s family was riding behind her when the accident happened, according to the Bangkok Post.
Stapleton’s younger brother, Joel Stapleton, remembered his sister in a heartbreaking statement to the Australian Broadcasting Company.
He called Jemma his “best friend” and said he was grateful for the time they had together.
“I’m so lucky to have had her guiding me through my first 21 years,” Joel said. “For those that knew her, you know how lucky you were to have her in your life.”
“Her smile was so bright that wherever she went, you knew she was there,” he continued. “I’m so grateful that I can call her my sister.”
Stapleton was a rising name in Australian athletics and a beloved figure in the running community.
The Stawell Gift, Australia’s most famous professional sprint race and one of the oldest running events in the world, honored Stapleton in a statement shared on Facebook.
“Jemma was a talented athlete, a 2025 Powercor Women’s Gift finalist and a much-valued member of the Stawell Gift family,” the organization wrote. “Her passion for athletics and her beautiful spirit will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.”
“Our thoughts are with Jemma’s family, friends and the whole athletics community at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Jemma,” the statement added.
The Victoria Athletic League also paid tribute to Stapleton, calling her “a valued member of our community whose presence, character and contribution left a lasting impact on those around her.”
Stapleton, who was from Melbourne, finished third in the 2025 Stawell Gift and made the final again this year.
A GoFundMe was created to help her family as they faced what organizers described as “immeasurable grief.”
In an update on the fundraising page, Stapleton’s family thanked supporters for their love and generosity.
“We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming generosity and love that has poured in from so many of you,” the family wrote.
“Jemma would have been absolutely overwhelmed to see her community come together in this way — it is a true reflection of the beautiful person she was,” they added.
The family later said contributions had been closed and asked for privacy as they grieve.
“The family are asking for privacy during this incredibly difficult time as they grieve and support one another,” they wrote. “Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.”
Stapleton had celebrated her 25th birthday on June 1, just days before the tragic crash.
