Bridge Collapse Kills 5, Injures Over 20 in Bangkok

A horrifying bridge collapse early Saturday morning on Rama II Road in Bangkok, Thailand, has left five workers dead and at least 22 injured, raising urgent questions about infrastructure safety and oversight.

Just before 2 AM, a massive concrete beam on the Rama III-Dao Khanong Expressway—still under construction—collapsed onto a nearby structure. More than 20 workers were onsite when disaster struck, sending survivors scrambling as the structure fell apart.

“I heard a loud cracking sound, and then everything started to collapse,” said a construction worker at the scene who wished to remain anonymous. “We ran, but some didn’t make it.”

Emergency teams, using search dogs and specialized rescue gear, swiftly mobilized to recover victims buried beneath tons of rubble. By sunrise, rescuers had confirmed five fatalities, including an engineer, two Thai workers, and two foreign laborers.

Bangkok city officials immediately closed nearby roads, causing major traffic disruption as emergency crews worked feverishly to locate one worker still missing.

Authorities Promise Swift Investigation and Accountability

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) pledged swift action, suspending the responsible contractor—a joint venture involving Italian-Thai Development Plc and Vijitphan Construction—for at least 14 days pending investigation.

“We will hold the contractor fully accountable,” Exat Governor Surachet Laophulsuk declared. He confirmed families of victims would receive compensation of at least 1 million baht each (approximately $28,000 USD). “Our priority now is determining what went wrong.”

Construction supervision was managed by Asian Engineering Consultants Ltd, Chotichinda Consultants Ltd, and MAA Consultants Ltd, raising concerns about oversight.

Amorn Pimanmat, President of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, told reporters it’s still early in the investigation but stated, “It appears the failure started at cross beams atop the supporting columns, causing multiple spans to collapse.”

Chronic Problems on Rama II Road

The Rama II expressway project has long been plagued by safety concerns and construction delays, frustrating local residents and impacting tourism. Rama II Road serves as the main thoroughfare linking Bangkok to key southern destinations, including the popular resort town of Hua Hin.

This tragedy adds to a grim history of infrastructure accidents on the road. Last November, a similar collapse killed six workers, while two other incidents in January 2023 and May 2023 resulted in fatalities due to equipment failure.

From 2018 to early 2024, more than 2,500 accidents have been recorded on Rama II Road, with over 140 deaths. Critics argue such chronic failures point to deeper systemic issues in safety regulations and project management.

“Enough is enough,” said one local business owner. “Every few months there’s another tragedy. It’s unacceptable. Who’s responsible for protecting us?”

The Expressway Authority aims to reopen affected roads within a week, although cleanup and repair operations could take up to a month, according to engineers involved.

This latest incident has intensified calls from citizens and policymakers alike for tougher safety standards and oversight in Thailand’s infrastructure development.
