A terrifying accident unfolded in Thailand as a tour bus carrying dozens of tourists, including British citizens, overturned on its way to the island of Koh Samui—now famous for its appearance in the hit HBO series The White Lotus.
The crash happened earlier this afternoon while the group was en route from Ao Nang in Krabi Province to a ferry pier in Surat Thani, where they were set to catch a boat to the island paradise. Witnesses described screams erupting from inside the vehicle as it veered off the road and flipped onto its side, landing in a grassy area beside the highway.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene just after noon. Paramedics and firefighters worked frantically to free passengers still trapped inside, using heavy cutting tools to tear through the wreckage. Dramatic video from the scene shows medics treating bloodied and shaken tourists on the roadside while volunteers gathered luggage scattered across the grass.
Authorities confirmed that at least 10 people were taken to area hospitals. Among the injured were a 23-year-old British traveler, a Malaysian woman identified as Shanmail Sharudae, 51, and the Thai driver, Theerawat Kohhem, 38. A German man, 49-year-old Alexel, was also treated at Chai Buri Hospital. Uninjured passengers were taken to the Bang Sawan Police Station for assistance.
The full cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police confirmed that the bus was carrying 40 tourists and three staff members when the accident occurred.
Thailand has long battled a reputation for poor road safety, with one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the world. The government has vowed to cut deaths drastically by 2027, but ongoing issues like weak law enforcement, minimal traffic education, and outdated infrastructure continue to pose major challenges.

This isn’t the first time in recent weeks that tourists have been caught in dangerous road accidents across Thailand. In February alone, multiple tour buses crashed under wet conditions, including one in Nakhon Ratchasima that left 18 injured, and another in Phang Nga that sent 11 people—among them a critically injured toddler—to the hospital. In March, dozens of Russian tourists were hurt when a bus rolled over on a sharp bend in Phuket.
The latest crash comes amid a surge in tourism to Koh Samui, largely driven by the so-called White Lotus Effect. After the show’s third season showcased the island’s luxurious beaches and resorts, interest among American and European travelers skyrocketed. The Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, featured in the series, reported a tenfold increase in booking inquiries, according to executive vice president Marc Speichert.
For now, investigators continue to piece together what went wrong on what was supposed to be a dream vacation in paradise.
