Man Accused of Trying to Bring Explosive Device and Weapons onto Flight

A Sacramento man has been indicted on federal charges after authorities said he tried to bring an explosive device and multiple weapons onto a flight at Sacramento International Airport.

Kimani Osayande Jones was indicted by a federal grand jury on three counts, according to the FBI.

The charges include attempting to place a destructive device on an aircraft, unlawfully possessing explosive material in an airport and attempting to carry a dangerous weapon or explosive onto an aircraft.

According to court documents, the alarming incident happened on May 30, 2026, as Jones tried to go through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint to board an American Airlines flight.

Authorities said Jones was wearing a scarf over his face and latex gloves when he arrived at the checkpoint.

Inside his carry-on bag, investigators said they found an explosive device, a torch lighter, knives, scissors, an aerosol can and zip ties.

Officials said Jones also had five cellphones with him. One of the phones allegedly displayed a 15-minute timer.

The discovery triggered a response from Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office bomb technicians and an FBI bomb technician, who removed the explosive device from the airport.

Federal prosecutors said testing later showed that the powder and fuse inside the device were viable and energetic. Authorities said the device had the potential to cause injury.

They also said that if the device had detonated near an aircraft window while the plane was flying above 10,000 feet, it could have caused a loss of cabin pressure.

Jones now faces serious federal charges. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison and ordered to pay large fines.

Authorities have not publicly said what Jones allegedly intended to do with the items, but the indictment paints a frightening picture of what investigators say was stopped before it reached the plane.
