Former President Joe Biden raised eyebrows again Saturday night after appearing unsure of where to go while leaving the stage at a Democratic gala near Baltimore.
The awkward moment unfolded after Biden, 83, delivered a roughly 10-minute keynote speech at the Maryland Democratic Party’s “Fight Back & Win Gala,” where party leaders gathered to rally voters ahead of the high-stakes 2026 midterms.
But after wrapping up his remarks, Biden paused onstage, looked toward the wings and pointed in two different directions as if asking where he was supposed to exit. After apparently getting guidance, the former president turned and walked off with his back to the audience.
The moment stood out because several other speakers reportedly exited from the opposite side of the stage after finishing their remarks. Biden, however, left in a different direction.
The latest incident quickly added to the growing list of public moments fueling questions about Biden’s sharpness and stamina after years of Democrats insisting concerns about his condition were overblown or politically motivated.
During his speech, Biden delivered one of his most direct attacks on President Donald Trump since leaving office, defending his own administration and accusing the Trump White House of corruption.
He also mocked what he called Trump’s “vanity projects,” taking shots at White House renovations, changes at the Kennedy Center and the ongoing controversy surrounding the reflecting pool on the National Mall.
“Whoa, what a loser,” Biden said at one point.
Biden also paused multiple times to cough during the speech before closing with a familiar call for Democrats to “fight back.”
“Folks, I guarantee we can do this. And we will. We just remember who in the hell we are. We’re the United States of America,” Biden said. “There’s nothing, nothing beyond our capacity if we act together. So let’s get up and fight back, God darn it.”
The stage confusion came just days after another awkward scene involving Biden went viral following the opening ceremony for the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
That event brought together a star-studded lineup of Democratic power players and former presidents, including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris and other political figures.
But after the ceremony ended, Biden remained onstage after others had already left. He then appeared to call out, “Where’s my granddaughter?” before former First Lady Jill Biden returned, took his hand and guided him offstage.
The two moments have only intensified renewed scrutiny of Biden’s public appearances, especially after his dramatic exit from the 2024 presidential race following intense pressure from within his own party.
For months, Democrats and their media allies dismissed concerns about Biden’s age and condition as partisan attacks. But after his disastrous 2024 debate performance and the party’s scramble to replace him on the ticket, critics argued the public had been misled about what was really happening behind the scenes.
Since leaving the White House, Biden has largely stayed out of the spotlight, making only occasional appearances.
The former president has also recently disclosed that he is undergoing treatment for Stage 4 prostate cancer, adding another personal challenge to his post-presidency.
Still, Biden’s latest onstage moment is likely to keep the political conversation going, especially as Democrats try to present a united and energized front heading into the 2026 midterms.
For Republicans, the image was hard to miss: the man Democrats once insisted was fully capable of serving another four years now appearing to need help simply finding his way offstage.
